Things to Do

The Gettysburg National Military Park (the battlefield) remains Gettysburg’s biggest attraction. Here, groups can hire a Licensed Battlefield Guide to learn about the nation’s most famous Civil War battle.

Another option is to drive around or walk through the park and explore the more than 1,300 monuments and markers devoted to states across the country, both Union and Confederate.

All trips to Gettysburg should begin at the GNMP Museum and Visitor Center. Here, twelve museum galleries, a History Channel film, and the famous Cyclorama Painting introduce visitors to the battle at Gettysburg that shaped the nation’s history.

Join up with a Town Guide for a historic walking tour and hear the tragic and heroic details of how Gettysburg’s own 2,400 residents coped with the more than 165,000 soldiers who came marching through town. Or follow in the footsteps of Abraham Lincoln as he arrived in war-ravaged Gettysburg to deliver what would come to be known as his famous Gettysburg Address.

Gettysburg is a place where families once endured horror and hope. The Shriver House museum tells the story of the Shriver family and how the Union and Confederate battle dashed all of their plans for opening a family busi- ness, instead putting them directly into the line of fire.
