WELCOME TO THE NORTH EAST LEADERSHIP ACADEMY ANNUAL REPORT

Director’s Statement

In this first year the North East Leadership Academy (NELA) has seen government policy requiring changes in the architecture of healthcare commissioning and service provision. Leadership capability and capacity are essential components if this large scale change, across a complex system, is to be achieved at pace. NELA has therefore focused upon supporting NHS North East leaders and staff to prepare in terms of capability and capacity to thrive in this new arena.

This first year for the academy has been an exciting time, characterised by the continuous development of leaders and managers to maximise their ability to improve services to patients and communities in the North East and this remains central to all NELA activities.

Work is well advanced on the fundamental building blocks of:

• building sustainability, for example in terms of coach training and facilitation skills

• learning activities, for example networks, master classes, summits and development programmes

All activities are considered to be performing well, judged by careful evaluation and the impact on services to patients and local communities.

As we move forward work is already underway to support the development of talent management processes and structures, in addition to considering the future challenges linked to the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention agenda (QIPP) and transforming community services.

Furthermore NELA is establishing itself by playing a prominent role in the shaping of the future of leadership by contributing to and influencing national debates.

The NELA year ahead is seen as an opportunity to demonstrate that the NHS North East community continues to strive to develop the very best managers and leaders to deliver the best possible healthcare to patients and communities that we serve.
