ANNUAL REPORT 2010-2011 Inclusion
To ensure that our leaders are representative of the community we serve the academy is undertaking a Black Minority Ethnic (BME) inclusion project which links to the academy aims of:
Improving support for boards and for people already in senior roles
To enable a more diverse leadership community
To act on behalf of the membership and focus on adding value, supporting innovation and practical support
To date, the project has made good progress:
From initial analysis of semi-structured interviews with NHS North East trusts one third of North East NHS organisations’ workforce have been found to be representative of the population they serve.
During the project, two North East trusts expressed an interest in the second cohort of the national pilot of the National Leadership Council Board Inclusion Development Programme. County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust has been confirmed as a national pilot site.
The academy has offered to host the North East BME Network once NHS structural changes have taken effect.
Talent Management
A task and finish group made up of human resources and organisational development leads from across the region has been established to identify a regional approach to talent management and best practice both in and outside of the NHS. The group met for a workshop with Chris Garner, Director of Talent Management, Bupa in February 2011 to begin this piece of work.
The NHS North East definition of talent management has been agreed as:
‘A system that aims to create organisational excellence by identifying developing and rewarding the best people by systematically identifying talent and providing the tools for developing skills to realise full potential’

We have increased BME representation on the NHS Emerging Leaders Programme.
We have the first North East participant on the NHS Breaking Through Programme.
A full report will be published when the project concludes in autumn 2011.
