NELA COACHING Supervision

All academy coaches practice within the NELA coaching framework. This framework sets parameters for safe coaching practice.

The first Continuous Professional Development and supervision event for academy coaches was held on 18 February 2011 and brought together the 50 coaches from across NHS North East.

During this event coaches refreshed their skills and experienced group supervision to help them to develop their coaching practice.

Similar events are planned to take place on a quarterly basis to continue to develop the skills and confidence of our coaches.

Building Capacity

In 2011/12 the academy plans to train NHS staff in coaching supervision to increase our self sufficiency in providing this support for coaches.

The academy is working with other regions to design an Information

Technology system to track coaching activity and to allow coaching relationships to be arranged across regional boundaries.

Work is also taking place with the Institute for Employment Studies to develop a National Coaching Evaluation

Model to improve the evidence base for the effectiveness of coaching in leadership development and to demonstrate return on investment in coaches and coaching.

‘Coaching was a bit of a mystery to me before I started on the clinical fellowship programme. I have had two coaching sessions so far and they have been extremely helpful.

What I have found is that having someone looking in on the situation, from a different background, but with expertise in developing your skills in different ways quite life changing. The support is different from mentoring as you are introduced to strategies that someone from within the profession may not have.

The feedback received in the sessions can either reinforce or challenge your behaviour or expectations, both of which support you to try. I look forward to my sessions and actually have found them help me to deal with difficulties and problems as they arise.’
