ANNUAL REPORT 2010-2011 NELANetworks
NELA networks provide leaders in the North East with the opportunity to undertake development without the commitment of a formal leadership programme. This includes attending master classes with expert speakers, workshop session and action learning sets. The academy currently has two networks – the Clinical Leaders Network and the Emerging Leaders Network.
The North East Clinical Leaders Network (CLN) provides development and support opportunities for clinicians in leading innovation and change in their organisations. The network is part of the national clinical leadership network which provides additional opportunities for involvement in national policy debate.
The membership of CLN is made up of a diverse range of clinicians, including nurses, GPs, allied health professionals, consultants, speech therapists, dentists, midwives and health visitors. The network currently has 80 full members and over 50 alumni.
In November 2010 the North East Emerging Leaders Network (ELN) was launched. The network currently has 40 members from all NHS North East organisations. The Emerging Leaders Network brings together a wide range of leaders from members of the NHS graduate management training scheme to directors.
Network events
The networks meet on a bi-monthly basis to learn together and to improve their effectiveness as leaders.
In 2010/11 NELA held 6 half day network events. Each event took the form of a plenary speaker followed by facilitated learning sessions.
‘Valuable network to explore current issues… has huge potential’ Member, Clinical Leaders Network
This gives members the space to problem-solve together in smaller groups, using a questioning style to help individual members to find solutions to the challenges they bring to the group. Members then decide on appropriate actions to take back to the workplace.
This is a powerful tool for problem solving and encourages members to develop a leadership style which is inquiring and inclusive.
Learning together is not confined to events; the academy has developed an online discussion forum for network members where the debates continue between events.
Further development
Network members also have the opportunity to join the wider academy membership for master classes and summits. Through master classes
members have access to speakers with a national profile such as Ian Dalton (Managing Director, Provider Development, Department of Health) and Jim Easton (National Director for Improvement and Efficiency, Department of Health) as well as to people who have implemented successful change initiatives in our region. Leadership summits give members the opportunity to share their improvement work with a wide audience.
‘Participation in an action learning set has enabled me to draw on the experiences of others in order to improve the way I deal with current issues in my own work area, whilst keynote lectures have proved conducive to bridging the theory-practice gap in my placement projects.’ Member, Emerging Leaders Network
