CLINICAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME Meet the candidate… Dr Alistair Blair
My innovation project is to examine the use of gain share between primary and secondary care to address the issue of high quality care in an economically challenging climate.
I aim to remove the barriers to efficient and effective patient care that the conflict between payment by results and commissioning create. I hope that this project will enhance care by the most appropriate individual within a fixed financial envelope.
To date I have successfully in engaged with the primary care organisation chief executive and the chief executive of one of the local foundation trusts to ensure that they are firmly interested in the gain share model.
The emerging GP consortia in Northumberland are considering using it as their method of choice for commissioning and we are currently planning a high level workshop including chief executives facilitated by Professor Chris Ham (Chief Executive, The Kings Fund).
My progress on this would have been impossible without the North East Leadership Academy’s clinical fellowship programme from which I have already benefited a great deal. I hope to continue to expand my knowledge, increase my self awareness and improve my performance in my current role.
Dr Alistair Blair is a practicing GP and GP lead for the Northumberland Commissioning Consortia
