ensuring that an acceptable level of intelligibility and SPL were met, whilst ensuring the aesthetics of the dome plaza were not compro- mised. The whole team managed to achieve this with spectacular effect. The final piece of the jigsaw for the re-vamp of the AEC was the building of a new theatre complex, which means the venue can accomodate a variety of performance layouts. The theatre has been equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual technology and has been acoustically treated.

Iconyx Live system for higher SPL applications.” The AEC required a Speech Intelligibility (STI) of 0.65 throughout the venue, venue foyer and dome plaza, so Aurecon, in conjunc- tion with Hills SVL, began designing a system based on the highly reverberant field and speech intelligibility requirements. Cocks told mondo*dr why the two companies opted for the first Renkus-Heinz option: “The Renkus-Heinz system was one of two completely differ- ent systems written into the specification as alternative options. The Renkus-Heinz Rhaon enabled Iconyx speaker was chosen due to the ability to digitally steer and position the audio within the required area, minimising reflections and increasing intelligibility. Iconyx offers a high level of audio directivity with highly suppressed side lobes provid- ing uniform sound distribution throughout the listening area. This also means that fewer speakers could be installed and the sound in the space is therefore more controlled. All amplification and digital speaker processing is housed inside the Iconyx speaker enclosure. The aesthetic of the venue was also a consideration and the Iconyx speakers were selected for their ability to disappear within the struc- ture from a visual perspective.”


The dome plaza is split into two sections, one used as a pre-event area and the other as an entranceway, separated by a glass partition. Two RenkusHeinz IC16-8R speakers were installed inside the dome pre-event area which, provide satisfactory performance for the major- ity of events in the dome plaza, however for events where extended bass response is required, line level patch points are installed below the Iconyx speakers providing connection for two portable Renkus- Heinz self-powered SG12S-5R subwoofers. The entranceway audio is provided by three Renkus-Heinz IC8R speakers. The dome PA system is predominantly used for pre-event background music ap- plications and public address announcements. Audio is controlled from the master AV and lighting control room in the existing venue. The CD / MP3 players, paging station, audio routing equipment, amplifiers and control devices for the entire venue are also housed in this AV room. Background music and paging sig- nals are converted from analogue to digital and are distributed via the MediaMatrix NION system. All input mixing, routing plus loudspeaker management and signal processing, including gating, filtering, equali- sation, limiting, time alignment delay and ambient noise compensa- tion is performed in the digital domain of NION. Cocks said of the pressures during the project: “There is always pressure during such a large project, especially considering the integration of so many Hills SVL products and brands. However, if the solution is well thought out at the design and specification stage and the right integrator is selected, then the stresses are always minimised.”

The venue also features motorised retractable tiered seating, which provides incredible flexibility on the type of layouts for performances it can accommodate. This space is most suited to contemporary live concerts, theatre productions, musicals, comedy and family enter- tainment for audiences from 500 to 2,500. The theatre boasts a plug ‘n’ play V-DOSC sound system from L- Acoustics, which was designed and installed by Wyn Milsom and Bob Daniels from Jands Production Services (JPS). The system com- prises nine V-DOSC cabinets, which are full frequency line source arrays based on the principles of Wavefront Sculpture Technology. At the heart of the V-DOSC cabinet is the internationally-patented DOSC waveguide, which fulfills WST criteria at high frequencies, allowing elements to couple coherently and create a single, continu- ous, isophasic sound source, making these speakers ideal for this type of fixed installation. In addition to the V-DOSC array, a cluster of three L-Acoustics dV-DOSC cabinets are flown either side of the stage, a total of 16 L-Acoustics SB-28 subwoofers, eight per side, and two L-Acous- tics Arcs per side, which are used as in-fill, have also be installed. The system is powered by six L-Acoustics LA-8 amplifiers, and is controlled via two Dolby DLP digital signal processors and a Motion 1200 wireless tablet.


Jim Straw of JPS explained how he and his team were given the contract at the AEC: “They [the AEC] approached us based on us being the official L-Acoustics V-DOSC network partner in Australia for 10 years and our success with the product.” He continued: “We were allowed to use our experience to design a system based on the needs of the clients who would be using the venue.”


Despite a tight timeframe for this project, Straw and his team man- aged to complete the work on schedule for the opening night. The rigging system the theatre had installed, which enables equipment to be rigged from the floor and moved up, down, forward and back- wards via remote control over the length of the entire venue, proved to be very useful.


Completing the audio line-up in the new theatre are nine Turbosound TCS121CB compact trapezoidal full range 2-way loudspeakers, and one Lab.gruppen C68-4 amplifier, both of which were supplied by Hills SVL.


The lighting equipment for the theatre includes DTS fixtures, ac- companied by a Chamsys 0100MQ10 lighting console. The DTS
