based at the Bristol main office and headed by Giles Philips, modelled the building in 3D to direct the placement of each piece of trunking and facility panel, and the numerous audio, lighting, video, motion control, comms and relay networks. From that, the team produced an AutoCAD model of the entire containment infrastructure to determine precisely how it would fit the fabric of the building, amid the seating, steelwork and concrete. Project Manager for Stage Electrics, Jonathon Porter Goff said of the CAD department’s work: “It was a big tool in terms of resolving clashes before it got to the stage of installing containment onsite. It solved all sorts of problems and allowed the client to see for themselves, and all of us to work out whether they could fly things past or even safely walk past it.“ The main system comprises a mixture of Meyer Sound and d&b audiotechnik speakers. Historically, the RST has favoured Meyer Sound and this association continued with a mixture of old and new. Most of the original Meyer Sound system was re-installed, including seven MSL2’s, which are, as Jeremy Dunn explained, “
...still working great even though they must be 18 years old.” Five M’elodie curvilinear array speakers were road tested in the Courtyard Theatre, and passed with flying colours. Six more have been added for the RST installation to make a larger cluster. They are accompanied by six UPM-2P compact narrow-coverage speakers, 56 UPM-1P compact wide-range speakers and six UPJ- 1P speakers, complete with VariO rotatable horns. selection of the d&b speakers, Dunn revealed it was decision related to more than just audio quality: “Obviously the quality of the d&b E0 is perfect, but the ball joint and mounting arm make it the ideal delay speaker.” Eight d&b audiotechnik D6 amplifiers power this particular part of the system, while four
Lab.gruppen C10:4X supply power where necessary. Seven Genelec 8040A powered speakers and a Genelec 7070A powered speaker have been installed as monitors. A DiGiCo SD7T mixing console was chosen. “We were one of the first theatres to buy the DiGiCo D5T, we now have two, and one of those is now installed in our revamped and reopened Swan theatre,” said Dunn. “The DiGiCo SD7T seemed a natural progression. Tim Shaxson from DiGiCo introduced us to the SD7 at ABTT trade show last year, we loved the ease of use and the extended scope facilities, apart from the audio quality, ease of use and the extended MADI interface, the console also has common-mode rejection ratio that’s second to none.” Three Lexicon PCM96 effects processors, one Stagetec Nexus DSP and EQ system and a five-strong Apple Mac Pro tower running QLab software complete the processing inventory. Communications are handled by an RTS Telex Two-Wire comms system with RTS BP-325 belt packs. Installed paging and the show relay system is built around MediaMatrix NION by Peavey, via Cobranet. The opportunity to see the fruits of the RST project and meet all the people behind it was both a quantitative and a qualitative experience.
