064 VENUE

“The installation of the front-fills in the large venue was planned in

predetermined holes in the beginning. When installing

them, this appeared to be a problem. So, Amptec then made E0 loudspeakers to size.”

2kW profiles, some of which are hung on the bridges, and some which are used at floor level. The decision was made to have the profiles in two separate locations, as it would make the lighting solution more flexible for the different applications brought into the theatres. ADB dimmers have also been installed. Van Lil explained the set-up: “We wanted to keep the dimmers as close to the lighting bridges as possible. Using the dimmers [ADB MIKAPAK 60] gave us the opportunity to do that because they’re very noiseless, you don’t really hear the fans. By putting them close to the bridges we were able to cut a lot of expense on cabling, which gave us the opportunity to add more dimmers so we could have more flexibility in the whole room. It’s the same in the small theatre and in the large theatre, we were able to put the dimmers very near to the places where we needed our luminaries and that we could only do by using these [the ADB dimmers].” The room acoustics have been given a helping hand by panelling on two sides of the room, as well as some curtains, which keep the audio reflections to a minimum. Van Lil said: “We wanted it to work using as little effort as possible - but it had to be good, it had to be, not good, it had to be excellent. That’s the philosophy of the whole technical input for both theatres. We don’t want high tech for the sake of it, we just want good equipment and we just want the best materials, which we can rely on, which we know once we’ve pushed the button it works. So we chose some very well known international brands, which we can really rely on. We know that whenever there might be a problem that the service is there, and we know that it will be fixed in a few hours. That’s very reassuring for us.” For the audio aspect at the theatres, the package had been divided into different tenders, however, after the submission of a variety of appropriate solutions, Amptec was chosen for the majority of the tenders. Amptec’s Sales Manager for PA and Theatre, Frank Geerts told mondo*dr about the design brief, which was set out by the City of Genk’s Culture Centre three years ago, when Amptec first got involved with the project. He said: “For the two venues, the result we delivered is a combination of the desires and the technical knowledge of the technicians, as well as the expertise and experience of Amptec. The time between the conception and the execution of the entire installation was useful to work out different details. All delivered goods - loudspeakers, mixing consoles and cabling - are fully compatible to use throughout the entire building.” A d&b audiotechnik system was chosen for both of the auditoriums. Geerts went on: “d&b audiotechnik is a generally accepted loudspeaker brand, very well known in Belgian theatres. Throughout

different rental companies, it’s one of the most seen brands in theatre tours and concerts. It is obvious that if a theatre wishes to have a fixed installation system, that they will choose a brand with a good reputation, complete with an installer with good references.” The small venue has a system which is flown left, centre, and right. It consists of six d&b audiotechnik Q7 and Q10 loudspeakers with four d&b audiotechnik Q-SUB subwoofers. The system is fitted with the necessary accessories and supplements so that the entire installation is moveable, and therefore can be used on location. This polyvalent space has been equipped with a powerful system that is capable of concerts and theatre for a standing audience, and for a sitting audience using a sliding gallery. The system is powed by d&b audiotechnik D12 amplifiers and controlled using an Avid VENUE mixing console. The large venue, which can seat up to 487 people, has two d&b audiotechnik Q1 line arrays, one left and one right with six cabinets per side. A central cluster, down-fills and six detachable d&b audiotechnik Q7 and Q10 loudspeakers extend the system. Two
