Justin Gawne General Manager

It’s been a hectic few months just recently with airmiles being clocked up around the world, and what is becoming clear is the very definite difference in the economic outlook of the East to the West. This became apparent during my visit to Las Vegas for Infocomm, and Rachael’s recent tour of the newly opened Marina Bay Sands Casino in Singapore, and if you look at this particular sector, being casinos and gaming, which is a heavy user of entertainment technology the divide is quite stark. In Vegas, the developments have all but ground to a halt; the city actually feels quieter and five-star hotels, which once commanded premium rates during large exhibitions, are offering rooms at $60 a night. Whilst in Singapore, where gambling has only recently been allowed, the City State saw a near 30% increase in visitors in May this year compared to the same period in 2009, which it has been suggested, is purely down to the newly opened Genting developed casino and the numbers can only increase with Marina Bay Sands. Also in Macau, developments which were on hold are starting to be worked on again, and if you look at this in purely monetary terms it is reported that Macau has now overtaken Vegas for revenue. This is of course, only one small sector, but it certainly reflects the current shift in economic might and whilst the Western economies take time to sort themselves out, it’s the Eastern countries that will be keeping us all afloat. Finally, I’d like to thank everyone who’s commented on, not just the new look mondo*dr, but also on its new broader editorial remit. All the feedback so far has been really positive and especially with regards to our 16-page World Cup special, so much so that we are now looking at doing our next supplement, which will focus on a number of the pavilions at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. We are planning this supplement to run in our November / December edition, and as with the World Cup special, as well as running in the magazine, it will also be a standalone publication. So on top of the already enormous amount of information we are receiving, if you have been involved in the Expo and want to get some dedicated coverage, get in touch and let us know what your involvement has been in this historic event or just drop by at one of our stands at PALME in Vietnam or Integrate in Sydney.
