VOV (Voice of Vietnam) is comparable to the UK’s BBC and similarly, its vast network encompasses various radio and TV stations throughout Vietnam. The national radio station started broadcasting from Hanoi just one week after declaration of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on September 7th 1945. VOV’s mission now is to offer diverse, high-quality programming in every aspect of mass media. It broadcasts on many channels, including medium wave, AM, FM and shortwave all over Vietnam and around the world. Last year their base in Hanoi was completely rebuilt to include a concert hall that seats close to 400 people. The theatre has dual functions: one of them is as a live performance space, equipped with a Yamaha LS9-32 FOH mixer; the other is as a music recording studio with an SSL C200 recording mixer based on Nuendo Vesion 4 software. The task of selecting the ideal audio system for the concert hall fell to Mr. Nguyen Nang Khang one of VOV’s principal engineers. The VOV engineer’s research was long and painstaking and he looked closely at and listened carefully to just about every product that was on the market. In addition to this, VOV considered the advice of a friend and associate who had extensive experience in the audio field. Not surprisingly, the Nexo range was brought to their attention and the result is a line array system featuring dual GEOSUB’s above a quad set of GEO D10’s augmented with a stage monitor system comprising eight PS 15’s and two LS 1200’s, all of which were powered through Camco Vortex amplification. All audio signaling in the theatre is connected by Ethersound or MADI format. Intelligent lighting in the hall is provided by Robe moving heads, along with Argentinean made Acento followspots by Dexel Lighting. Outside in the newly landscaped grounds of VOV is a mammoth relic from the Vietnam war. It is a huge LOA 500W speaker used to broadcast ‘propaganda’ messages during the war. These days VOV has become such an effective media network, there is of course no need to use such devices but the speaker makes a great monument and reminder of Vietnam’s historic struggle.
