028 REPORT
Wednesday 23 June marked a very memorable day in Singapore, as it was the Of- ficial Opening of Marina Bay Sands, the latest construction built by The Las Vegas Sands Corporation.
MBS is home to a hotel with 2,561 suites, the first Banyan Tree Spa in Singapore, the only island store of Louis Vuitton, a state-of-the-art convention centre stretching 120,000 sq metres, the first nightlife venture in Asia by Pangaea and Avalon, and a 150 metre long vanishing edge swimming pool located on top of the three 60-storey hotel towers in the ship shaped SkyPark. And one of the main attractions, certainly from the locals point of view... is a casino. MBS is only the second complex in Singapore to have a built-in casino. And it appears this has had a significant effect on visitor numbers, the Singapore Tourism Board, reported 946,000 people flocked to Singapore in the month of May - a figure which is 30.3% higher than the same period last year.
The opening day itself began with a press conference headed by Las Vegas Sands Corp. Chairman and CEO Mr. Sheldon G. Adelson, President and COO Mr. Michael A. Leven, as well as President and CEO of MBS Mr. Thomas Arasi, addressed more than 1,000 people from the media, spanning various genres and countries. Adelson began by saying: “I’d like to thank the Government for their support and faith in put-

ting together the first integrated resort outside Macau, in Asia. We are very happy to have been chosen from 19 companies to complete this project. And I would like to thank all the team for making my vision a reality.” Before the first casino, located at Resorts World Sentosa, and MBS had been given permission to build such estab- lishments, casinos had always been banned from Singapore, so this opening was really a significant moment for citizens of the country.
Adding to the already extensive list of amenities, MBS will envelope 800,000 sq feet of retail and dining space, headed by celebrity chef restaurants and designer branded shopping outlets, two theatres, and an outdoor plaza suitable for a number of functions, including live music performances.
A creative ‘Artwall’ designed by James Carpenter Design Associates New York, with lighting by the Renfro Design Group, was built and installed by Permasteelisa, providing another attractuive feature. Working closely with Permasteelisa, Illumina- tion Physics devised a custom high powered Linear LED fixture that contained both cool white and royal blue Cree XRE LEDs and used asymmetric lenses and different mounting angles within a single linear light fixture to create the desired effect. In the hotel Atria, Singapore-based lighting designers PLD chose RCL to provide the lighting. A specially created ‘lightbar’ carrying up to eight DR8 lights of a new
