CASINOS

Playgrounds for adults and hotbeds of technology, casinos offer multi- faceted solutions in entertainment. Often more than just destination venues, their multi-sensory appeal and levels of investment routinely amount to landmark builds. Here we look at some highlights from around the globe...

design will allow a combination of 150W CDM-T and 300W PAR56 lamps to be accurately directed down into the space for a height of 21metres. Further entertainment on opening day consisted of a gong ceremony, an extreme stunt performance which saw professional climbers embark upon scaling the world’s newest architectural icon, and a concert headlined by former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland, supported by Singapore Idol runner up Sylvia Ratonel and Singaporean music artist JJ Lin. The grand finale of the Official Opening came courtesy of Australian laser company, Laservision which put on a spectacular show radiating across the Bay. To conceive, design, produce and deploy a spectacular opening event for what has been billed as the ‘world’s most expensive casino property’ was no easy task, but the expertise of the Laservision team pulled it off with phenomenal effect.

Project Director Colin Balwin and Event Manager Shannon Brooks led the team as they set out to transform the unique structure of MBS. The convention and exhibi- tion centre, casino and twin theatres’ massive concave roof was illuminated using 1000 IP36 LED washlights and 36 Anolis Xtreme LED washlights, transforming the one kilometre of roofing into a vibrant live and colourful canvas. By using LED fixtures, it gave the hotel the ability to come to life in a wash of colours and created

animated ethereal effects across the entire extent of the resort. The arts, science museum and events plaza were brought to life with five A&O Falcon 7k Xenon searchlights, four A&O Falcon 7k Xenon searchlights, 18 7k and 5k Syncrolites, three Laservision Light-Ray RGBY, and four Laservision Stella-Ray laser systems. The multiple searchlight beams were extended from the water oculus up towards the top of the towers and beyond.

Probably one of the most talked about attractions within the resort, the Sands SkyPark was under-lit with a dramatic animated ‘water’ gobo lighting, where Laservision employed a further six A&O Falcon 7k Xenon searchlights, and 14 DTS XR3000 1200W moving heads in tempest domes to further enhance the architect’s dream of a ship floating in the night sky. The show control came from a MA Lighting grandMA2 desk and a grandMA Ultralite, both of which were programmed by Ryan Marginson.

As midnight dawned, the Official Opening ceremony came to a close, but all those who were present came away sure that they’d been part of a extraordinary day, which will be remembered in Singapore history for years to come.
