Diving in Curacao
Curacao
Wonderful Caribbean reef diving
and old world charm
Curacao combines year round diving on
excellent reefs and some well established
wrecks. This cosmopolitan island has much in
common underwater with its smaller neighbour
Bonaire. Curacao’s fantastic fringing reef runs
the entire length of its southwest coast, offering
a range of superb dive sites just off the shore.
MARINE LIFE
Curacao is one of the most southerly islands in
the Caribbean and this protection from wet
weather means that the waters surrounding the
island support extremely healthy coral growth and
good fish stocks. Adorned by intricate hard and
soft corals, Curacao’s reef system is home to a
wealth of marine life, including angelfish,
parrotfish, groupers and trumpetfish.
The area around the small, uninhabited island of
Klein Curacao is well known for its occasional
sightings of turtles and pelagics. As day turns to
night, dive lights illuminate squirrelfish, eels and
lobster emerging from their daytime hideouts.
CORAL FEVER
Curacao has over sixty recognised dive sites, with
around forty of them accessible from the shore.
Like its sister island Bonaire, Curacao is
particularly renowned for its wonderful corals.
Huge intact sea fans and pristine hard corals will
delight any diver. Mushroom Forest is one of the
most spectacular coral sites with its huge
population of mountainous star coral. The coral
heads have bio-eroded at the bottom, resulting in
tube-shaped formations that make a great hiding
place for macro life.
WRECK DIVING
There are a number of excellent wrecks adding
variety to the underwater scenery around
Curacao. The cargo ship Superior Producer sank
just outside Willemstad harbour in 1977 and now
lies at 30m, covered in beautiful corals and
anemones. A little further down the reef at Car
Pile, old cars from the 1940s lie on top of one
another, forming the base to a gently sloping reef
that continues down to 70m plus.
Staying on Curacao
Curacao is the largest of the Antillean islands and it has much to offer above the
water. Willemstad, the capital, has been awarded World Heritage status for its
unique Dutch Caribbean architecture.
OTHER HOTELS
Numerous bars, shops and restaurants give the
town a cosmopolitan and lively atmosphere.
Curacao is also home to some of the finest
