Diving in Pemba
Pemba
Combine drift diving and deserted
white beaches
Lying north of Zanzibar, Pemba offers an
incredible mix of thrilling drift dives, vertical
coral cliffs and diverse marine life, making it one
of the most spectacular dive destinations in the
Indian Ocean. Visually, the western shore of
Pemba is stunning, fringed by a number of
exquisite small islands, inlets and bays, leading
to an incredible coral cliff that drops to depths
of over 300m.
An island with little development compared to its
neighbour Zanzibar, and steeped in history, a stay
in Pemba offers divers, snorkellers and non-diving
partners a beautiful place to enjoy themselves
both above and below the water.
A twin centre stay between the resorts of the
north and south of Pemba is recommended, to
gain access to the variety of dive sites on offer
across Pemba.
DRAMATIC DROP-OFFS AND REEFS
Protected reefs and dramatic vertical coral cliffs
of more than 800m are the defining feature of
many dive sites along the west coast. Coral
gardens, sponges and sea fans cover these
marine cliffs, which often stretch as far as the
eye can see. They host a fascinating array of
colourful reef fish, turtles and pelagics and large
Napoleon wrasse. The view over of these
spectacular precipices is typically excellent,
from 20-60m.
MARINE LIFE ABOUNDS
Manta rays and whale sharks may be
encountered from October to March, when they
come into the channel to feed. Whales are both
seen and heard as they migrate north from July to
September, and dolphins are frequently sighted.
There is a resident large school of spinner dolphin,
which inhabit the west coast of Pemba. In water
encounters, though, are typically with bottlenose
dolphins as they are slower and more docile. The
shallower waters of the inshore dive sites are
home to smaller tropical fish including the rare
and endemic chromis damselfish.
CHOICE OF DIVING OPTIONS
Diving in Pemba is available with shore based
options in the north and the south of the island,
staying at The Manta Resort & Divers Village and
