Bali is renowned for its friendly population and
beautiful scenery. The island has a rich cultural
heritage set against a backdrop of volcanic
mountains, which rise to 3000m above
sea level. Underwater, the combination of
fascinating macro life, pristine corals and deep
water pelagics helps to secure Bali’s place as
one of Indonesia’s top diving destinations.
MACRO TO PELAGIC: MANTIS SHRIMP TO
MANTA RAYS
Located in the Bali Barat National Park,
Menjangan Island has a dozen recognised sites
ranging from sheer drop offs to small caves,
sandy slopes and a beautiful blue-green lagoon.
This location periodically attracts deep water
pelagic species like manta rays and whale sharks.
Napoleon wrasse, grouper, barracuda and other
sharks are also occasionally encountered.
Secret Bay, recognised locally as Gilimanuk, is
undoubtedly one of the finest macro dive sites in the
world. This mangrove bordered bay is home to an
incredibly diverse range of species, from seahorses
and a variety of ghost pipefish, through to dragonet,
nudibranchs, mantis shrimp and many more. A must
for macro enthusiasts and photographers alike.
LOCAL DIVE SITES
Two kilometres off shore from the Pondok Sari
and in front of Matahari Beach Resort, there
is a fine reef with excellent coral cover along
the slopes. The east side of the reef is
particularly beautiful, with numerous shallow
caves supporting healthy sponges and providing
many hiding places for an interesting range of
macro life.
Located just off the beach at the Pondok Sari,
Karang Lestari is an award winning artificial reef
project, which stimulates coral growth on man
made metal structures, using low voltage
electricity. The process encourages coral to grow

at eight times the normal rate. The frames make
an excellent nursing ground for juvenile reef fish.
& LIVEABOARDS
Just beyond this reef project, Kebun Batu or Rock
Garden is a pinnacle of coral with a flat top. This

is an interesting dive site during the day, which
offers a lot of macro subjects. However the site
really comes in to its own after sunset, when it
makes for a superb night dive.
