Diving in Djibouti
Djibouti
Encounters with whale sharks
in the Devil’s Cauldron
Situated at the point where the Red Sea and the
Indian Ocean meet, Djibouti boasts an incredibly
diverse range of marine life. The relative
absence of developed tourism remains a large
part of its appeal, ensuring that many dive sites
stay as yet untouched.
AN INCREDIBLE BIO-DIVERSITY
Djibouti is a dry, mountainous country, shaped by
volcanic activity. The arid landscape contrasts
sharply with the rich waters of Djibouti, and these
fertile feeding grounds attract a range of species
including whale sharks, manta rays, pilot whales
and dolphins. Various shark species are also
encountered, including grey and nurse sharks.
Extensive reefs with over 200 coral varieties cover
the coastline, and offer as much to the snorkeller
as the diver, especially during the whale shark
aggregation from October to January.
GOUBET AL-KHARAB
From October to January, plankton blooms
develop near Djibouti town in the Gulf of
Tadjourah, in a large enclosed bay called Goubet
Al-Kharab, or ‘Devil’s Cauldron’. This bay is
recognised for its role in the development of
juvenile whale sharks, which can be spotted
throughout the year, but concentrate in greater
numbers during this time.
THE SEVEN BROTHERS
These remote uninhabited islands lie in the narrow
Bab al Mandeb Straits, marking the southern
entrance of the Red Sea. A range of superb and
challenging dive sites around the Seven Brothers
offer some of Djibouti’s most diverse diving. The
area is renowned for fine corals and strong drift
dives, as well as the excellent visibility which is
often present.
STAYING IN DJIBOUTI
Divers and snorkellers have the choice of either a
liveaboard or hotel based holiday.
Regaldive’s special charters on M/Y Deli during
the whale shark season offer a week long water
based experience to maximise encounters with
these gentle giants, in the Gulf of Tadjourah and
Goubet al Kharab.
Outside of Regaldive’s charter dates, M/Y Deli
offers liveaboards for individuals to join an
adventure cruise, combining diving and
snorkelling with land based excursions around the
Gulf of Tadjourah during the whale shark season.
During the summer months when the seas around
the Seven Brothers are calmer, M/Y Deli offers
diving itineraries further north to these waters.
For clients after the ultimate in luxury, stays at the
Kempinski hotel in Djibouti town are offered, with
day diving and snorkel trips with the dive centre
‘Dolphin Excursions’, who also operate M/Y Deli.
