The stunning aerial view of an open ocean,
interspersed by many tiny islands, with
beautifully-patterned lagoons and reefs lying
below turquoise water, cannot fail to excite divers
arriving here. A world-class diving destination,
the Maldives boasts an incredible diversity of
dive sites and marine life in a beautiful and
relaxed setting that will captivate any visitor.
RICH MARINE ECO-SYSTEM
A collection of more than 1200 islands, dispersed
over 26 atolls, makes up the Maldives. Channels,
or Kandus, separate the islands that stretch over
an area 900km from north to south. The warm
waters and plankton rich currents support a rich
marine eco-system that has created some of the
best diving in the world.
CHALLENGING DRIFT DIVES
The sheer diversity of diving in the Maldives is the
key to its enduring popularity. New dive sites are
being discovered all the time, and with the
development of previously inaccessible atolls, the
diving possibilities are endless. Within each atoll
there are sheltered reefs, located away from fast
flowing currents, that are suitable for less
experienced divers. By contrast, those with more
advanced experience will enjoy some incredible
drift dives in the fast flowing channels that are
packed with marine life.
EXCITING ENCOUNTERS
The Maldives are renowned for the quality and
quantity of marine life, and divers in these islands
have an excellent chance of seeing species that are
becoming increasingly rare around the world. Game
fish and many types of shark are regularly
encountered on both outer reef and channel dives.
Whale sharks are occasional visitors, whilst manta
rays, of which there are believed to be 25 species in
the Maldives, can generally be seen all year round.
DIVING SEASONS
Although there is excellent diving available all year
round in the Maldives, there are two distinct
seasons that may influence your choice of where
to go and when. During the Northeast Monsoon
(Dec-May), underwater currents filter down from
Sri Lanka bringing less rain and calmer seas.
Islands located on the eastern side of an atoll
generally enjoy clearer visibility, whilst the nutrient
rich waters attract plankton feeders towards the
