of developing and maintaining full time equivalent resources in Jersey. This allows TCB to be more competitive which in turn means cost savings for the clients that allow them to drive down their costs to keep them competitive in their own sector. TCB can also take advantage of the skills and expertise in Malta to grow a core of good, experienced developers in Jersey helping to develop a truly digital Jersey.

Whilst cost is a key driver it is not the only driver. Understanding the island challenges is also a huge benefit.

Malta faces the same issues as Jersey. It needs to find streams of income to maintain and grow the economy having few natural resources other than its people. The focus has been on technology and has been supported by the government and education sectors there in the same way as the development of the finance industry has been supported in Jersey. It meets the needs of both islands to use technology to make finance competitive.

“eGov” or putting the government online has been a focus in Malta for a number of years. They are ahead of Jersey in this area. TCB is planning to use this as a springboard to supporting eGov in Jersey. The aim is to take advantage of the high quality developers at a reduced cost who already have knowledge and experience in the area to share the knowledge and experience with the local team and jointly develop great solutions that will benefit the government and the populations of both islands with easier access to government services at a lower cost.

On visiting Malta, as an English person, one feels very much at home. Apart from being wonderful people, they drive on the correct side of the road, use English plugs, are brought up with English culture and are fans of Monty Python. It may sound trivial but it means the team at Ascent have a much deeper knowledge of English which in turn leads to a deeper understanding of how to do business in Jersey, much more so than many other technology centres in the world.

The staff of TCB and Ascent have become closer over the last year, integrating internal systems using the cloud and sharing ideas around the conference table, over video conference and indeed around family dinner tables. It is not just a commercial arrangement, there is a true understanding between the two island based companies which helps to deliver a single, united experienced and cost effective organisation.

By working together everybody benefits. Jersey clients who are looking for cost effective technology solutions get more for their money when investing to drive down costs. Jersey benefits by having reduced costs of doing business and access to experience in the development and eGov areas. Malta benefits by exporting software services; and TCB benefits by being able to grow in a controlled and sustainable way whilst minimising the impact on Jersey’s infrastructure whilst maintaining and growing IT skills and experience in the Island.
