Bill Harris Chairman and Race Director, UBS Jersey Regatta

behind the scenes

First combined boating regatta

goes from strength to strength

The first Jersey Regatta was held in 1999 when the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club, St Helier Yacht Club and St Catherine’s Sailing Club formed a joint organising committee to produce the first combined clubs’ regatta. In that first year, there were just over forty entries making up the sportsboat, cruiser/racer, dayboat, dinghy and sport-catamaran classes. The sixteenth Jersey Regatta, held last September, saw one hundred and seven boats racing, including many visitors from Guernsey, the U.K. and France.

An event of this nature relies heavily on the generous support of sponsors if the entry cost is not to be prohibitive.

Leading wealth management company UBS AG is the most recent of these and we are all delighted that 2015 sees the third ‘UBS Jersey Regatta’. Jersey Tourism and Port of Jersey have also supported the Regatta since the beginning, with Jersey Tourism helping hugely with promotion whilst Port of Jersey provides unstinting help during the run-up to and throughout the event.

This success story reflects the enthusiasm of the Island’s sailing community and the behind-the- scenes work carried out by the organising committee and clubs in promoting and preparing for this great event. The committee comprises representatives from each club, their responsibilities are all-encompassing, and planning for each Regatta starts immediately the current one is over. Things are less hectic at this stage with

meetings being held less frequently than during the busy couple of months leading up to the competition. With sixteen years experience, this is a well-trodden path but not unchanging as we are always conscious of the need to respond to changes in ‘customer demand’ and to adapt to developments in the sport.

Our year starts with much preparatory work involving liaison with our sponsor;

promotion of the event through U.K., C.I. and French clubs, the local media and international yachting media; liaison with public authorities and other interested parties, production and distribution of regatta documentation and, most importantly, the appointment
