A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...

DUNCAN LANGSTON

DIRECTOR OF WAITROSE IN THE CHANNEL ISLANDS

The alarm goes off at 6.00 a.m. and, providing I’m feeling fit and it’s not raining, I’ll go for a jog around the Queen’s Valley Reservoir to clear my mind before contemplating the day ahead.

After sitting down for a coffee with my wife, and attempting to get my boys out of bed, I make the journey to one of the three Waitrose Jersey branches at Rue de Pres, St Saviours.

As a branch manager my role is to meet customer demand, reach out to the community, surpass their shopping needs and leave a lasting impression on them to return. Communication is key to my role at Waitrose with everyone from the Partners (our employees), customers, other businesses and even the local media.

I start my working day with a walk around the branch, catching-up with the Partners who have been on the night shift, checking all the stock levels and that all the deliveries went as planned.

After checking in with the branch team it’s time to review the previous day’s trading, ensuring that we are meeting our targets and generally looking at what’s going on in the business before getting together with the senior management team to discuss the day ahead and agree on any proposed activity.

Once I’ve caught-up with my department managers I review emails and interact with the wider business, particularly the other branch managers in Jersey and Guernsey and our team in Bracknell, where our head office is based.
