A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...
PR DIRECTOR, THE REFINERY
As an English Literature A-Level student (a long time ago now) I studied the works of Oscar Wilde and I vividly remember a quote where he exasperatedly said: “I am not satisfied with myself or my work”. It was humbling to read this from someone of his inspired ability and this sentiment has stuck with me throughout my professional career - I am constantly reminded that we can do better and that recurrent improvement is paramount, whether you’re a great playwright or a lowly marketeer!
Every day at The Refinery brings its challenges and I am lucky to have a team around me that aspire to be the very best. I became a director at the age of 27 and having responsibility for a team is something I relish on a day-to- day basis - ask my family and they will tell you that being bossy comes naturally too.
Since becoming a director I have remained hands-on in my public relations department. Each day brings with it new projects from clients that range from law firms, to Michelin-starred restaurants, to technology innovators. Some of my day is pre-determined such as press release issuing, web copy creation and marketing strategy meetings but much is also generated as a reaction to the day’s news agenda or clients’ unpredictable lifecycles.
Last week I had a day that was split between work in both Jersey and London. The day began at 7.00 a.m. with a fruit breakfast (only Friday’s are reserved for gut-busting breakfasts for the whole Refinery team from Don Street Deli). I then jump on the bus from Gorey Pier and head to the office – the coastal route provides the ideal quiet environment for organising emails or writing tricky bits of copy before I hit the busy office. As soon as The Refinery gets into full swing, it’s phones manically ringing, production meetings, and news monitoring. On this particular day, I had a new client meeting for a business requiring a website and suite of collateral and then it was time to run ‘Cash Dash’ – a campaign we’ve been working
