SOME QUESTIONS FOR MICHAEL:
Question: What do you do to unwind at the end of a long day?
Answer: Good question! I have two wonderful young children and they keep me on my toes right up until their bedtime. When I do get a chance for time to myself I really enjoy going for a long run which helps me relax. Then there are those days when a run is just too much, in which case, and perhaps this could be seen as my one indulgence, I do like to enjoy a pint.
thousands of things to do, from planning the changes to fine tuning parameters and dealing with external contractors or any problems that may occur.
Lunch is normally taken on the fly, I take a packed lunch every day, normally a healthy rice dish and maybe a sandwich. If I’m lucky and get to finish on time, I’ll shoot to the nursery and pick up my one year old. Once home, any chance of relaxing can be forgotten about as we look after our youngest and her five year old brother.
Bed by 9.00 p.m.…exhausted!
Question: What do you like the most about being a Network Engineer? Answer: The telecoms industry is right at the leading edge of technology and there’s no doubt in my mind that the thing I like most about my work is being at the forefront of the digital revolution which is changing the way we live and work. I also enjoy working as part of a streamlined and close-knit team, so I get to know my colleagues well and get involved with projects from the start through to their delivery.
Question: What do you dislike most about being a Network Engineer? Answer: Probably the long hours, which can be a strain, particularly as I have a family.
Question: How did you become a Network Engineer? Answer: First and foremost, I’ve always been interested in technology. In Jersey, the telecoms industry offered one of the best ways to move in to the technology sector. I started working in transmission networks before moving to mobile networks. However, now that mobile, landline and data technologies are converging I find myself working on all types of networks, which is fascinating and keeps me on my toes!
Question: What advice would you give someone, either just starting their career or midway through their career, who wants to be a Network Engineer? Answer: The short answer is to get studying. There’s a lot to learn but it doesn’t all have to be learnt before you start. Technology is constantly moving so once you begin working in the area, you have to keep up to date, meaning that the studying never really ends. One of the best ways into the industry is to apply for a place on a training programme such as the Sure Academy. Programmes like these give you the chance to learn about the wider telecoms business as well as providing you with the technical expertise to develop a fulfilling career.
