On the Move 2015 WILL BE A MOBILE YEAR FOR TELECOMS By Graham Hughes, Chief Executive, Sure (Jersey) Limited
It’s never easy to make predictions but one thing that you can count on is that digital and communications technology will continue to move
forward in leaps and bounds. This is particularly true in the mobile arena, where the Channel Islands can expect to see superfast mobile broadband available to them for the very first time. However, that’s not
all that will change, explains Graham Hughes, CEO of Sure Jersey as he looks into the future of the local telecoms industry.
The 4G mobile broadband revolution You may have heard quite a lot about 4G mobile broadband and may be wondering what the fuss is all about, given that political and regulatory issues have delayed its launch in the Channel Islands.
That delay is about to come to an end, enabling islanders to enjoy 4G, a technology that will truly change the way you use your mobile devices. 4G is going to deliver landline broadband speeds to your mobile phone, which means that you will have an always on, superfast broadband connection at your fingertips, whenever and wherever you are.
In the business world, 4G is the technology that will finally deliver a truly mobile working environment. The increased data rates on both 3G and 4G will make full mobile cloud access possible across the Channel Islands. In turn, this will enable the complete adoption of mobile data capabilities in businesses. With firms increasingly turning to the cloud for their IT systems, services and storage, staff will be able to access virtually every file, no matter what its type or size, on their mobile devices.
As far as leisure is concerned, 4G will unlock the full power of our smartphone. You will be able to download full length HD films in a matter of minutes. Online gaming on your mobile will be a much smoother experience that avoids the dropouts that can ruin your play.
4G will also play a key role in the adoption of wearable technology. As more of us take to smartbands and smart

watches, we will find ourselves not just accessing the Net on our phones but also on small, discreet devices which sync with our smartphones via Bluetooth, enabling us to make calls, surf the Net or upload our life data to eHealth services with greater convenience than ever before.
2015 is set to be the year for 4G in the
Channel Islands with all three major operators planning to rollout their networks. At Sure, we hope to be the first to launch a 4G network and at the time of writing in November are planning to go live early in 2015 alongside completely new second and third generation networks. This means that not only will smartphone and mobile data users see a significant improvement in their mobile data experience but their entire mobile communications experience will be enhanced.
Increasing choice in broadband services As islanders increasingly connect to the island’s fibre network, we’re all looking forward to seeing consistency in the reliability of service as well as pricing that will enable us all to enjoy the benefits of superfast broadband.
To achieve this, telecom companies will continue to work closely with the regulator to ensure that the wholesale pricing models, which dictate the price at which broadband services can be resold, will provide enough room for companies like Sure to be able to provide innovative and competitive services, offering customers a wider range of products than would otherwise be available.
