Landline broadband, which has continually been the most popular form of broadband, will for the first time, have to cope with the significant challenge posed by 4G’s mobile broadband capabilities. As we are all increasingly connected, we will use broadband for more functions around the home. From entertainment to education and health, services that we are used to receiving in person or via a non-Internet technology are moving online.
Competition at last! Beyond technology but crucial to its development is the need for an open and competitive market place. The middle of the year will see the opening up of Jersey’s landline market, which will mean greater choice and lower prices in the second half of 2015.
As well as paying less for landlines, islanders will at last be able to buy full packages of telecoms and multimedia services from companies like Sure. This means that we will all be able to enjoy having a single telecoms supplier offering lower pricing and a superior experience across all of their services.
Once competition on individual landline services has been introduced, Sure will continue to support the rights of islanders to enjoy a full range of choice in telecoms services by pushing for the removal of one of the last barriers to true telecoms competition - the opening up of the market for multiple landline services.
When this is achieved, Jersey will finally have a truly competitive and therefore much more innovative environment in which to develop its digital capabilities.
Cloud power Over the course of 2015, we will see more people and companies moving all or parts of their IT systems and services into the cloud. On the business front, we are already seeing a growing trend for private or hybrid

cloud services and, as racks grow in density, so our data centres are seeing an increasing demand for power.
As a result, we are pleased to see the Normandie 3 power cable coming online to deliver a more resilient power supply to the island.
As the cloud matures, firms are realising that a well- managed cloud can deliver greater security more easily than in-house services. Sure’s Intrusion Protection and Detection Systems (IPS / IDS) offer an excellent protective environment, as was displayed recently when they reacted instantly to the Heartbleed and Shellshock bugs by protecting our client systems and maintaining the integrity of their data.
As the market gains in confidence, 2015 could well be the year that the cloud grows up.
