SOME QUESTIONS FOR LOUIS:

Question: What do you do to unwind at the end of a long day?

Answer: I really enjoy cooking and find it very relaxing planning and cooking a meal, which can then be enjoyed with a nice glass of red wine before having to throw numerous tennis balls for “Harry” to chase up and down the garden; a pastime that he never seems to get bored of.

Question: What do you like the most about being a Paralegal Specialist? Answer: Paralegal is a strange term really because effectively every police officer who has specialised in some way can be classed as a paralegal; but in the private sector it is being able to carry on utilising the skills that have been developed over thirty-one years.

Question: What do you dislike most about being a Paralegal Specialist? Answer: Probably it is the term Paralegal Specialist. In this day and age everything seems to require a title of some description, and in reality how do you try and explain the skills of retired police officers. Private Investigator is not strictly correct so Paralegal Specialist probably fits the bill, or Old Bill!

My wife has the experience in running a debt collection company and I have the experience in running investigations and together we make a formidable team. The service that we offer our clients, I can happily say, is totally unrivalled by the other agencies in the Island. Understanding the importance of gathering intelligence is as important in this line of work as it was in the States of Jersey Police. I remember being seconded to the Metropolitan Police Anti-Terrorist investigation unit following the London Bombings in 2005 and seeing intelligence gathering on a global scale being put to the test. More importantly I learned about using the best open source material and that is something that I am employing now, hopefully, to the benefit of our clients.

Question: How did you become a Paralegal Specialist? Answer: The term aside, the experience gained working on and supervising many major criminal investigations, preparing extensive files for cases before the Royal Court, giving evidence before the Magistrates and the Royal Court, attending specialist-training courses (such as Interview Techniques, Achieving Best Evidence, Financial Investigation, Disclosure Officer and Expert Witness) and passing promotion processes all build a portfolio of skills that are transferable to the private sector, whether it is working for yourself, as I have chosen to do, or seeking employment with a law firm.

Question: What advice would you give someone, either just starting their career or midway through their career, who wants to be a Paralegal Specialist? Answer: Simply get as much experience as possible in specialist departments, areas of policing where you need to interact with lawyers, the Law Officers Department and those responsible for preparing complex case files. Plan your career carefully and don’t rely on anyone doing this for you, you need to take the opportunities as and when they come your way.
