Telling it straight...

China

Recent liberalisation of Chinese

regulations governing new start-up airlines has triggered a rapid expansion in the country's aviation sector. Two new airlines – Yingan Airlines, based in the southwest province of Yunnan and Kunming-based Ruili Airlines are the newest on the scene. They follow hot on the heels of Zhejiang Loong Airlines, which commenced operations from Hangzhou late last year, while Qingdao Airlines received its first aircraft last month. Other new carriers due to begin operation include Donghai Airlines, Sutong Airlines and Urumqi Airlines.

India

Air India is to lead a campaign to persuade the

Indian Government to lift a ban on wifi connectivity within Indian airspace. The ban has stalled plans by Air India to offer internet onboard in the way many other competitor carriers already do. The ban also means that wifi users overflying India with connected carriers lose their connectivity and opportunities to use their mobiles until they leave Indian controlled airspace. India also only allows airline passengers to use personal electronic devices during the cruise phase and prohibits the use of mobile phones at all times while inside the aircraft.

Middle East

Abu Dhabi International Airport's

marketing team has been ranked the best in Asia, according to a panel of aviation experts. The airport won the prized accolade at the annual ‘Routes Asia Marketing Awards’ held in Malaysia. The UAE’s capital city airport also won the top marketing award for the best airport in the continent that handles between four and 20 million passengers a year. Abu Dhabi will now represent Asia in the ‘World Routes Marketing Awards’ to be held in September to determine the best global airport.

Japan

With the expansion of Haneda

International Airport, Narita International Airport is working hard to stay ahead. Plans are now officially underway to build a long- awaited third runway (a 3,200 metres cross runway south of the terminals). There are many obstacles to overcome yet such as small plots of land still held by airport protesters and negotiations with surrounding municipalities, but once a completion date is fixed it will certainly help Narita maintain its position as Tokyo’s major international airport.
