Comment MARCH 2014

A second spectacular year at the London ExCeL exhibition centre, which despite tube strikes intent on causing as much disruption as possible, actually broke attendance records. What was equally striking at the event was the claim that ICE is currently the only truly global gaming event on the calendar. Having moved to February and a new ‘barely London’ location, concerns about ICE have stabilised as compared to the other major gaming events, which are in a state of flux right now. G2E Vegas has been steadily becoming a domestic market for both North and South America and despite shifting from September through to November and back again, remains the launch platform for the US gaming sec- tor. What’s uncertain right now, is the future of both Macau exhibitions and SAGSE Buenos Aires.

In a meeting held during the ICE show, exhibitors quizzed Macau show organis- ers as to the exhibition in May and rival event in November. While it appears that there’s little appetite for a second show in Macau from the exhibitor per- spective, the organisers of the November event, backed by the Macau gaming authorities, look to have the upper hand. If G2E Asia has to move locations to either the Philippines or Singapore, backing from exhibitors could fall away as Singapore is a two casino market and the Philippines is a logistical nightmare fro an exhibitor perspective. Japan has also been mooted as a possible venue, potentially creating the most expensive show to exhibit at in the world. That’s an honour for which the SAGSE Buenos Aires show is currently reaching, with excruciating import costs in a market that has been eroded from within by the government. There is little appetite at present to return to Argentina for the next event, unless things radically change in the country, something over which the event organiser has little con- trol. While two years ago we were dis- cussing the upheaval with the ICE show, events have now come full circle.

WHILE TWO YEARS AGO WE WERE DISCUSSING THE UPHEAVAL WITH THE ICE TOTALLY GAMING SHOW, EVENTS HAVE NOW COME FULL CIRCLE.
