 IN THE NEWS ARINC ADDS AIRCREW TO CABINCONNECT CEA in favour of PED


 The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), a trade association representing the US consumer electronics industry, has announced support for the US FAA advisory committee's recommendation that passengers should be allowed to use personal electronics devices (PEDs) at all altitudes. The proviso is that aircraft need to be assessed to be cetain they are resilient to radio interference.


 ARINC is a provider of communications and satcom connectivity to the aviation industry, and is an Inmarsat Distribution partner for both Classic and SwiftBroadband services. ARINC has now launched CabinConnect for Passenger wifi service provision both within the commercial air transport and also the business jet markets.


CabinConnect allows passengers to use their own PEDs to browse the web, send email, use social networking sites and shop online. Passengers’ PEDs are

automatically redirected to the hotspot portal. SwiftBroadband Satellite connectivity is by Inmarsat's reliable I-4 constellation.


It is trialling with Virgin Atlantic on three A330s. It is a simple-to-deploy, comprehensive solution that includes potential for streaming video, the new AirCrew Connect system to improve CRM and services, and EPOS terminals for live credit card authorisation. ARINC ground services include data caching and image optimisation to make the most of the available bandwidth.


Astronics additions


Astronics, technology provider for the aerospace and defence industries, has acquired certain assets and liabilities from antenna supplier AeroSat Corporation, for US$12 million. AeroSat

The FAA established the PED Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) to provide guidance on the expanded use of electronics devices on aircraft without compromising safety. The ARC included 24 private sector and government experts, including representatives from the aviation and electronics industries; pilot and flight attendant unions; the IFEC industry; passenger advocates; and several government agencies. Said Doug Johnson, vp of technology policy at CEA, and a PED ARC member: “CEA applauds the FAA for initiating this comprehensive examination of the issues involved in additional use of consumer electronics on planes. We now urge the FAA’s immediate review, consideration and pursuit of the advisory committee’s recommendations."
