ECO ON BOARD airberlin A330 on scales


airberlin is putting a pilot scheme into practice, as part of its eco-efficiency programme, in the course of which all the objects which are not permanently attached to an A330 are removed and weighed. The objective of its “Papa Charlie” Clear Out Mission (the title of which is taken from the last two letters in the registration number of the Airbus A330) was to identify those items which were not absolutely essential to flying the plane, in order to further optimise airberlin’s ecological footprint.


38 members of staff from six different departments collaborated on this project, which was carried out in the airberlin technik hangar in Dusseldorf, and in the course of a few hours they removed all the items that were not actually attached to the plane from the long-haul aircraft, then weighed and recorded them. Afterwards, a team of airberlin experts assessed whether each item could potentially be replaced by a less heavy alternative. For example, a hard copy of the manual does not need to be carried since it is already available in digital form on the computer in the cockpit.


In total, there were around 630 kilos’ worth of items on board the D-ALPC which were not permanently attached to the aircraft. airberlingroup.com

Plane Talking join Arik Wolfys porridge goes on the rails


Plane Talking Products is to supply West Africa's Arik Air with two new ‘Ladies & Gents’ amenity kits for its Premier Class from December this year.


The kit has a two-bags-in-one design, meaning passengers can use the inner bag as a discreet cosmetics bag, keeping toiletries separate from ‘dry’ contents. The ladies bag contains a handy clear PVC inner pouch that can also be used separately as an airport- friendly security bag for 100ml liquids, while the more masculine lines of the male kit have a mesh inner pouch and matching pocket. Temple Spa-branded products were selected to combat the dehydrating effects of aircraft air conditioning.


The bags also steer away from the corporate look using a soft neutral colour palette of warm greys and browns to complement Arik Air’s Premier cabin interior. Chris Bell, senior manager in-flight services and product, Arik Air, commented: "Plane Talking have done a great job in taking our design brief and turning it into a bespoke pair of amenity kits for both our male and female Premier guests. They worked hard to ensure that the colours and styles complement both the cabin interior and other amenity products already in use on Arik Air. Rail Gourmet has chosen to serve a brand new porridge on board First Great Western rail.


New to the rail catering industry and a relative newcomer to the porridge market, Wolfy’s porridge range is the result of a summer season of wet, windy and cold music festivals. Lucy Moinet, whose business provides food for crew, artists and security at festivals, was looking for something portable, tasty and warming to keep the staff going through their long, cold shifts.


After trialling early samples, Lucy’s parents and owners of Kitchen Garden Foods, Barbara and Robin Moinet, took up the challenge to create the best porridge they could, in an easy-to-carry form, using whole oats, milk powder, cane sugar, nuts and other natural flavourings that require only boiling water and four minutes to create. To ‘top the taste’, a small pot of Kitchen Garden’s hand- made jam or honey sits just under the lid, ready to tip in.


The result is a tasty and healthy porridge in a lightweight pot that comes in three varieties: Wolfy’s Nutty with Honey Pot, Wolfy’s Spiced with Pear and Ginger Pot and Wolfy’s Creamy with Berry Pot. First Great Western will be serving up the Creamy with Berry Pot. wolfys.co.uk
