evin Shutler started his Merry Maids franchise in 2005, after working in retail management for 30 years. Last year, Kevin’s wife Penny gave up a daily commute of over fi ve
hours – and her job as team leader of 12 at a top investment management company in London – to join Kevin in the business where together they provide a professional domestic cleaning service for the North Wiltshire area. Of her career change, Penny says: “I
love it! I get to see the sunlight, breathe fresh air and get out and about; it’s wonderful not spending my life sitting on a train or at a conference table. “The team of girls at Merry Maids have

able to learn so much from them. As the ‘new girl’ coming in, they’ve been great. I hope I can bring some of my offi ce-based skills to the business as well.” Kevin and Penny are passionate about
delivering excellent customer service to their clients and having Penny on board means they can develop this area of the business further. As Penny explains: “Customer service
is one of the most important parts of our business, so as well as taking on the role of marketing director, I’m also in charge of customer service. I make sure we set and meet our own extremely high standards with each clean.” Kevin says: “It’s fantastic having Penny
working with me. We estimated that in the nine years of commuting, she spent 487 days on a train – days that I didn’t get to see her, so I’m thoroughly enjoying having my wife back as well as the huge difference she’s making to the business. “In January we committed to increasing
the size of our business by 25 per cent over the next 12 months and are set to achieve that goal. Penny has been a major part of this success, focussing on online and offl ine marketing, brand awareness, and customer service standards. I have no doubt that we will meet – if not exceed – that target and I’m delighted to be doing it with my wife by my side.” n
