What is your typical day like? I always get into the office at least 30 minutes before the rest of the team to clear my emails and prioritise the jobs for the day ahead. This can involve marketing, banking, dealing with customer issues, preparing quotations or attending meetings – no two days are ever the same, which is great.
What are your plans for the future? We plan to keep on expanding the business – the territory is big enough for almost unlimited growth and we appeal to such a wide range of business sectors that there will always be plenty of potential customers to target. attract new industry through sustained investment; recent figures show that it has had the fastest-growing employment base of any city in the UK. Glasgow City Council is leading on 20 major infrastructure projects in readiness for the 2014 Commonwealth Games; these will create even more employment and business opportunities for the area. Although I have no immediate plans for retirement, I will be handing over more work to my daughter, Claire, over the next coming years.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking of buying their first franchise?
Speak to as many franchisees as you can and make sure that you can choose which ones you contact; I would be suspicious of any franchisor who tried to restrict your access to franchisees in any way. Choose a franchise that suits your abilities and provides good levels of support; and try and find out how well the business stands up to difficult trading conditions.
