Making connections – from traffi c to rail management

John Meredith, business manager at Imtech Traffi c & Infra, describes the benefi ts of bringing tried-and-tested solutions from other markets to the UK rail industry.

W

hilst well-established in the UK highways market through its Peek technology

brand, Imtech Traffi c & Infra (Imtech T&I) is a new name to the UK rail industry – albeit one that has already delivered signifi cant railway solutions in continental Europe and the UK.

Manchester Metrolink, Croydon Tramlink and the Midland Metro, for example, already use Imtech T&I’s VECOM system for vehicle location and control purposes. Over 50 such systems are installed worldwide. In addition, Imtech T&I has designed and installed over 350 level crossings in the Netherlands, supplies nearly all of ProRail’s DC traction

power switches and rectifi ers, and as part of the Asset Rail consortium, maintains 300km of the Dutch rail network.

Imtech T&I’s experience in the delivery and management of traffi c control systems for motorways and urban road systems, including the management of traffi c fl ows, traffi c signals, condition monitoring, and variable message signs, has parallels with the railway industry. Many of the core systems do not impact on safety critical or safety-related applications, and are therefore readily transferable to the UK railway industry. In particular, condition and status monitoring and reporting systems

for components and sub-systems, including the communications channels used, can be applied across industry sectors.

Noting the increased demand for energy effi ciency in railways, Imtech has developed an Automatic Regeneration Unit (ARU) to allow the regeneration of braking energy through the DC traction system back into the electrical grid.

This system will be on trial on the Rotterdam Metro system later this year.

Beyond that, Imtech T&I will seek opportunities to introduce such a system in the UK, either as integrated units or as retrofi t units. This is one example of the innovation that Imtech seeks to bring to the UK rail market either from our existing rail activities worldwide, or from our transportation activities.
