Joined forces deliver a fi rst class service
Lafarge Tarmac is a new UK joint venture company, formed in January 2013, which sees two heavyweight brands from the construction materials and services industry being brought together. Paul Batchelor of Lafarge Tarmac explains more.

Within this overall philosophy, a push towards working on projects that will be improving the UK’s future infrastructure is imperative. With many years of experience working alongside contractors, local and regional authorities, Defra, the Highways Agency, Network Rail, the British Port Association and the Airport Operators Association, Lafarge Tarmac is exceptionally well-placed to offer the expertise and support required.
Lafarge Tarmac’s portfolio includes an industry- leading range of construction materials and services, from commodity products up to the highest specifi cation or bespoke, value-added solutions. We focus efforts on customer service to ensure we meet demanding performance criteria and build programmes.
Within the rail sector specifi cally, both Lafarge and Tarmac have historically supplied a range of essential products for the construction,
maintenance and repair of rail infrastructure, including specialist aggregates and asphalts.
Tarmac regularly worked on projects
associated with the upkeep and improvement of railway assets, including aggregates for rail ballast, asphalt for car parks, slip roads and pedestrian areas, and specialist concretes for the construction and repair of platforms, goods yards, tunnels and bridges.
Most recently Tarmac supplied their Topforce high performance concrete for the Birmingham Gateway project – the high-profi le regeneration of New Street railway station. Topforce was specifi ed for the new fi ve-storey car park at the rail terminal on the basis that it doesn’t require steel mesh and because construction depths of the site were very limited in places.
Lafarge has been one of the main suppliers of rail ballast in the UK since fi rst supplying British Rail in the 1970s. More recently, over the last fi ve years Lafarge has supplied approximately 5 million tonnes to Network Rail by standard rail haulage, road and specialist rail haulage. Current sales volumes to Network Rail are circa 900,000 tonnes per annum and the main volume of material supplied is high-quality granite rail ballast, and specialist products such as Stoneblower Aggregate.
