They will also be presenting a seminar regarding the use of industrial safety PLCs for a modern, future-oriented railway infrastructure. Staff from the UK, and other Pilz countries where successful use of the PSS 4000-R has been made, will be available on the stand to talk about the benefi ts of PLC technology for the rail sector.


Previous safety solutions in the railway sector


have largely used proprietary, specialist technology, much of it based around relay logic; however, this has often involved a lot of work for a one-off approval, particularly with regard to rail safety standards, and the systems are expensive to maintain.


Pilz produces a compact and modular TÜV SÜD Rail certifi ed safety PLC system, PSS 4000- R, meeting the requirements of rail standards for communication, signalling and processing systems such as EN 50126 (reliability, availability, maintainability, safety); EN 50128 (software); EN 50129 (safety-related electronic control and protection); EN 50121 (EMC); and EN 50155 (rolling stock).


This enables PSS 4000- R to be used in rail safety applications such as level crossings with confi dence that it meets harsh requirements for temperature (e.g. -40°C


+70°C), vibration, EMC and mechanical load and provides standard-compliant solutions for applications up to SIL 4.


Powerful PLC software can replace complex relay logic wiring and create certifi able function blocks which can be used and re-used in new safety cases. Safe ethernet communication using fi bre-optic infrastructure allows long- distance communication and diagnostics for remote signalling via decentralised I/O.

STAND: C91 Sleeper supplier


Nigel Bramley, fi nancial director at GMT Manufacturing Ltd, outlines its credentials in supplying the steel sleeper and signalling markets.

MT Manufacturing Ltd has produced steel sleepers for 15 years and has been


Network Rail’s exclusive supplier for 10 years. During that time, a quantity approaching three million steel sleepers have been supplied to the UK and overseas markets.


GMT expanded the range of approved sleepers to include guard rail, UTX, short and a hollow sleeper. Additionally a range of steel sleepers has been supplied to various overseas markets from 1,000mm to 1,600mm rail gauge.


GMT has manufactured and supplied 150,000 sleepers of the type 202 one metre gauge for Tata Rail’s export markets in Africa in 2012. More recently, GMT has been part of Tata Rail’s development programme for the new 300 series sleeper. This is an upgrade to the existing 202 sleeper to meet the need for increased speed and axle loads for the one metre gauge market.


Over the last few years GMT has supplied steel sleepers to several major UK projects including


the supply of 75,000 steel sleepers for the 14-mile stretch linking Airdrie to Bathgate, which re-opened in December 2010. The line is electrifi ed double track and is the fourth link between Glasgow and Edinburgh, primarily for commuters. Sleepers supplied were mainly the standard 560H hook-in, guard rail and also UTX sleepers all manufactured by GMT. The Balfour Beatty track-laying NTC machine was used to lay the track at a rate of about 1,200 yards per day.
