s a company Garrandale has been operational in the rail industry for nearly 40 years, designing, developing, installing and maintaining a wide range of carriage wash, fuelling, controlled-emission toilets, lubricating systems and depot protection for rolling stock across the UK and Ireland.

Throughout this time the rail industry has seen a number of changes, not least the increasing strain put on rolling stock as passenger numbers continue to rise. As a result of these changes it has been necessary for the company to constantly evolve to fi nd solutions to deal with the many problems associated with the maintenance and servicing of rolling stock.
This evolution has been made possible through the use of innovation and by drawing on Garrandale’s vast experience to provide

Solutions provider Garrandale will be using the forthcoming Railtex exhibition to showcase the wealth of experience it has in engineering, rail and chemical technology. Sales and marketing director Andy Coles explains more about why this experience means it can provide a solution to every problem.
specialist equipment and handling systems which address a number of unique engineering challenges.
Chris Moore of Garrandale said: “Some of the challenges faced by the rail industry are fairly standard, because every maintenance depot has a strict maintenance regime. But at the other end of the scale there are challenges unique to that depot and, as a result, the equipment we provide can vary from simple access platforms to sophisticated and bespoke transfer equipment for heavy pieces of plant. What is constant across all of our solutions is the need to engineer a product that will provide a solution to a problem.”
Intelligent train washing
A good example of this is the recent development of a new train wash system, which has been completely redesigned from the ground up. The new solution uses 70% less steel and as a result is considerably more cost-effective than its predecessor. Garrandale has also redesigned the way the system operates, and the introduction of water recycling means operators can gain up to 60% savings, providing a payback period of as little as two years in a retrofi t application.
Moore said: “Everything we do as a company is about continuous improvement to reduce costs and improve effi ciencies. By working with the train operators we can understand where the problems are and develop a solution to fi x it.
“Water recycling is a very good way to save money, but we have also introduced a system of cleaning in sequence, whereby the brushes are only operating

when the rolling stock is adjacent to it rather than having an ‘all on’ or ‘all off’ situation. Again, this provides cost savings for the train operator and increases the effi ciency of their machinery.”
Cloud based technology
Another area where Garrandale is using the latest technology for the maintenance of depot equipment is through E-Link – a cloud based solution that provides real-time remote monitoring and reporting for depot managers.
The system is optimised for train wash equipment (but it can be installed and used for any PLC-controlled depot equipment) and provides historical data on train washing and faults. In addition, because it is accessed through a web portal, it is easy for both the train wash manager and the depot manager to access the data in real time, from any location, and assess immediately if there is a problem that would impact on the maintenance schedule.
This, together with E-Portal, which allows information and documents to be stored on a web-based portal, is taking the maintenance of depot equipment into the next century.
E-Link ensures that any problems can be identifi ed at the earliest opportunity and that depot equipment is kept running at its optimum effi ciency. E-Portal then allows documentation such as PPM records, method statements and risk assessments to be stored remotely, allowing everyone to gain access quickly and easily.
The use of a web-based system ensures everyone knows what is happening at the depot at any given time – but perhaps more importantly it ensures that nothing is overlooked and that the appropriate records are kept in a place which is accessible to everyone.
These are just a few of the ways in which Garrandale is using the latest technology and innovation to provide solutions that not only meet a need for the industry, but also allow the industry to operate cost effectively and effi ciently.
