The most important meeting place for the railway industry


Karin Spjuth explains more about Elmia Nordic Rail, the only railway fair in Scandinavia, and says it is the railway industry’s most important meeting place.


T


he railways are high up the political agenda in Scandinavia. There is great demand for new connections and for maintenance of the existing transport system, not least in order to provide efficient, eco-smart routes for freight and passengers alike.


Consequently, billions of kronor are being invested in both maintenance and new construction in all the Scandinavian countries.


This makes Elmia Nordic Rail an important meeting place. This


is where decision-


makers, politicians, and trade and industry representatives have an opportunity to discuss the infrastructure of the future and to find out about new research, technology and experiences. At the same time, suppliers of machinery, equipment, personnel and technology have an arena in the exhibition floor. Sweden has a tradition of engineering and railway know-how that goes back over a century, and the sheer scope of the fair is therefore truly attractive.


This year Elmia Nordic Rail is being held for the tenth time – and the fair just goes on growing. The first ever fair had just over 2,000 participants, and by the last fair that figure had tripled. It is also interesting to note that international participation is steadily increasing.


The fair’s project manager Jörgen Nyström said: “Forty per cent of our visitors come from outside of Sweden.”

A new feature at this year’s event is the major matchmaking forum. There is a shortage of suppliers and contractors for the major infrastructure projects in Sweden.


The Swedish Transport Administration – the authority responsible for Sweden’s transport system – has begun to look abroad for more companies who want to tender for contracts. A matchmaking forum will therefore be held during the fair, initiated by the Transport Administration.


The forum will enable international and Swedish companies to meet and start collaborations relevant to the Administration’s multi-billion-kronor investments. The invitation and registration procedure will begin in late May.

The fair is also a place for anyone wanting to improve and deepen their knowledge. An extensive conference programme, announced in May, will present topical subjects for the railway and transport industry. They could range from safety and security and market opening in the Nordic region, to the infrastructure of the future.


Sweden’s minister for infrastructure is already confirmed for the conference and the Danish and Norwegian ministers have been invited, as have representatives of the national transport administrations and trade and industry in the Nordic countries. Visitors to the fair can also take part in a range of free lunches and seminars arranged by exhibitors.


Elmia Nordic Rail is held in parallel with Elmia Future Transport, Sweden’s leading trade fair for transport and logistics.
