A new turnkey support solution
LPA Transport+ is a new turnkey support solution from LPA Group bringing together the extensive experience, knowledge and capability of LPA Group companies in lighting, electronics and electro-mechanical product design, development and manufacture to offer an integrated service for rail vehicle manufacture and refurbishment, says managing director Mike Jones.
UK
based LPA combines advanced design with a domestic and international
supply chain and highly automated processes and
skilled assembly to manufacture internationally competitive products exported to nearly 50 countries around the world.
LPA Transport+ uses a partnership approach based on close communication,
tailored
products, quick response and innovative solutions, including on-site installation to offer a turnkey solution, providing a single source for asset maintenance, refurbishment, repair and upgrade.
LPA Transport+ is about providing support at the sharp end of service delivery. We pride ourselves in understanding the challenges
• Cab desk upgrades to the latest standards and visualisation comparable with new vehicles, together with replacement door relays developed to eliminate wiring or panel changes. This project was designed in partnership with a consulting engineer and the train operator; manufactured in-house, with fi nal assembly, modifi cation and installation on-site. The production programme to refurbish 172 cabs and 344 environment panels was completed early, to target, and within 10 months from contract award start to completion.
• Ethernet backbone and CCTV system installation on 46 four-car units in a three- month window ahead of the Olympics. Working for a major CCTV manufacturer,
the door maintenance issues caused by the original aluminium treadplates expanding through corrosion, which were trapping the door bottom edges and causing door failure.
• Toilet door locking mechanism redesigned to eliminate failure modes, manufactured in- house and installed on-site.
• Vehicle end valance covers to secure and protect ageing GRP valance. Designed, approved and manufactured in-house and installed on-site during windows of availability whilst the trains were on maintenance examination.
• Grabpole, treadplate and sillplate modifi cation and refurbishment for half-life

faced in sustaining asset performance and the need to improve reliability, availability and functionality at low life-cycle cost.
LPA Transport+ has already supported
customers across a full range of services from small scale modifi cations to large equipment refurbishment solutions implemented on site. Our customers have told us that not only are we innovative and responsive, we are also excellent value for money – which in part comes from our integrated approach.
LPA Transport+ has had a fl ying start to the new support business we launched in 2011. Some examples of the projects we have delivered so far have been:
130 | rail technology magazine Apr/May 13
LPA Transport+ managed the installation and integration of the system onto the train, including design and manufacture of the mechanical installation kit, routing of the cabling inside and underneath the vehicles to comply with group standards, and fi ne- tuning the installation to achieve a 10-hour installation window. Trains came out of the morning peak and handed back to the operator 10 hours later, with only one peak service pattern missed.
• Door treadplates, re-designed and engineered with VAB approval, manufactured in-house in stainless steel to counter corrosion arising from dissimilar metals used in the original design. This has practically eliminated
overhaul of LUL fl eets.
LPA Transport+ is currently working in partnership with customers on LED lighting installation, design and manufacture of interiors and the replacement of existing fi bre- optic train control communications with super- fast, ultra-reliable copper alternatives.
In short, because LPA designs, manufactures and installs, LPA Transport+ can offer innovative solutions bringing cost, risk and timescale advantages to your business.
