Pemtron Solder Paste Inspection Upgrades EPE Production
Seoul, Korea — Pemtron’s TROI 5700 3D solder paste inspection systems (SPI) has been selected to go into serv- ice at EPE Corporation, Manchester, New Hampshire —a third-generation, ITAR-Registered, veteran-owned pro - vider of complex electronic contract manufacturing services. EPE Corporation will utilize the
SPI within its quality assurance pro- gram, for automated inspection of its printed circuit boards. After assessing the capabilities of four systems, EPE selected the Pemtron SPI over the other offerings. “The features of the system were comparable to the other vendors we evaluated, but offered bet- ter value overall,” said Matthew Ami- don, EPE Corp.’s Director of Manufac- turing Operations. “The thing that stands out is the willingness of Pemtron engineering to provide cus- tom solutions to meet our needs.” EPE focuses on manufacturing
complex assemblies for low volume, high mix products, providing supply chain optimization for industries re- quiring high levels of flexibility, con- figuration management, repair depot services and logistics solutions. The company specializes in contract man- ufacturing services, providing ex- pertise to support a diverse array of end markets including: defense and homeland security, medical, commu- nications, industrial automation, consumer and RF. EPE’s critical inspection re- quirements called for an SPI solution
that would meet the demands of its unique operation.
Critical Inspection Needs
The systems are used in-line to in- spect 100 percent of all of its screen printed boards prior to assembly, al-

lowing the printed boards to move into the assembly equipment only after they pass the measurement criteria set at SPI system. “The equipment prevents us
from populating boards that have in- adequate solder paste deposits — ef- fectively preventing solder related defects from occurring during the as- sembly process,” said Amidon. “The 5700 SPI immediately identifies problems with the screen printer setup, allowing us to eliminate prob- lems before they occur. Our first pass test yields have increased dramati-
cally on low running prototype and production builds. The systems have allowed us to reduce non-value added labor by eliminating an SMT touch- up step from the process,” he added. The TROI 5700HL system of- fers in-line, high-resolu- tion, high-speed, dual pro- jection 3D solder paste in- spection for large PCB boards, up to 500 x 460mm (20 x 18-in.). The TROI Se- ries color 3D solder paste inspection (3D SPI) sys- tems use the latest color al- gorithms to produce im- ages in-line with the ap- pearance of an actual PCB, providing customers with powerful quality control, accurate automated 3D in- spection with convenient, easy-to-use and highly cus- tomizable software.
Traditional 3D imaging only ex-
presses the height as a color map. The TROI SPI utilizes Pem tron’s patented technology, connecting 2D colored im- ages with 3D measuring data to pro- vide detailed and accurate 3D color images.
According to the company, the
intuitive software offers powerful in- spection capability, with quick and easy programming in 5 to 10 min- utes. The Gerber import module and user-friendly, step-by-step program- ming minimizes set-up time and en- sures ease-of-use for users at any
level. A graphical interface displays all key functions in one convenient window, eliminating the need to switch between multiple screens.
Fully Automated Operation The TROI can be set to fully au-
tomated defect classification or oper- ator classification mode. Classifying defects by operator provides conven- ient, easy-to-read results and full- color 2D and 3D solder paste views. In addition, statistical data col-
lection is stored for process control in commonly used database formats, which users can sort, recall and print in various chart and graph formats. “The team at Pemtron has been in- credibly responsive to our needs,” said Amidon. “They have worked with us on every aspect of program- ming, providing us with the specific features we need. It is that kind of service that makes us confident working with Pemtron. The system has proven to be a very effective quality control tool for our organiza- tion and we look forward to working with them in the future for our SPI
inspection needs.” Contact: Pemtron Corporation,
