July, 2012 Medical Electronics Symposium Names Keynoters

Minneapolis, MN — Two keynote speakers for the two-day SMTA and MEPTEC symposium titled “Medical Electronics Technology, Personal Health and the Economy — Drivers for Positive Business Growth,” will be Keith Lindor, M.D., Executive Vice Provost for Health Solutions, Arizona State University, and Livia Racz, Ph.D., Division Leader of Microsystems Technologies at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory. The event will be held

September 26-27, 2012 at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. ASU’s School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering is co- sponsoring the event. Dr. Keith Lindor, will give the

keynote presentation “Personal Health: Concepts Impacting Health - care” to kick off the first day of the event. Dr. Lindor will discuss how environmental aspects, personal choice, genetic factors and health care itself must be built on and aligned with the overall determi- nants of health. He will outline how the use of predictive testing, transla- tion of work from cell cultures to peo- ple, home care monitoring, and even changes in how we pay for health care will eventually depend on micro- electronics technology. Technology advances in these areas will con- tribute to our overall goal of better health with less expenditures and a healthier, happier, more productive population. Livia Racz, Ph.D. will present

“Trends in 3D Micro-Packaging for Emerging Implantable Applications” as the keynote on the second day. Dr. Racz will explore how implantable medical device applications continue to grow as technologies improve and

NEPCON China 2012: Latest SMT Technology

Shanghai, China — The three-day NEPCON China 2012 exhibition ended April 25, secure in its place as a high-profile trade event for new manufacturing equipment, technolo- gies and solutions. Local and inter- national exhibitors demonstrated a wide array of solutions on-site, and included the SMT industry’s most innovative companies. By focusing on topical issues like future develop- ment trends, electronics manufactur- ing automation, ESD, new novel energy and light sources, the event served as an accurate barometer of today’s electronics manufacturing industry trends. This year’s exhibition occupied

a record 34,000m2 (365,973-ft.2), occupied by more than 500 exhibitors from over 22 countries. Exhibitors presented 1,000+ pieces of electron- ics manufacturing equipment, test and measurement products, compo- nents and other machinery. In addi- tion, 18,392 elite members of the industry, together with buyers from various fields, attended the exhibi- tion, the highest number of visitors in the show’s history.

opportunities emerge for better ther- apies and improved long-term out- comes. Implants are increasing in complexity and sophistication, with a corresponding increase in the need for data processing power. Advances in 3D micro-packaging of hermetic systems could lead to “injectable” implants produced at the wafer scale, enabling a host of new prosthetic

applications. Contact: SMTA, 5200 Willson

“Made in USA” Stars at Design-2-Part Shows

Prospect, CT — As the country is engaged in a manufacturing renais- sance and stories of work returning to the U.S. are appearing daily, the Design-2-Part (D2P) Shows will look to continue to support that trend with six fall regional shows. “In our 2011 Outsourcing

Survey, U.S. OEMs indicated that “quality” was their most important factor in measuring outsourcing partners. In search of that quality, a lot of the attendees walking our shows are looking at bringing jobs

previously done offshore back to U.S. soil. We are proud to be showcasing America’s finest job shops and con- tract manufacturers,” said Jerry Schmidt, President of the Design-2- Part Shows. With five of six spring shows

completed, D2P has already experi- enced a very encouraging 6 percent increase in show attendance. (See “Calendar,” previous page, for

upcoming show locations and dates.) Contact: D2P, % 203-758-6663
