several special days and events. For example, lodges should sponsor youth recognition activities during Elks Youth Week, which begins on May 1st and continues through May 7th. During this week, lodges should recognize the accomplishments of local youth, including scout groups, student groups, and scholastic achievers. Local state officials should be invited to proclaim Elks National Youth Week or to issue a special supporting message to the public. Many young people work hard throughout the year and will appreciate this recognition.

On Sunday, May 13th, lodges should celebrate Mother’s Day. This is a very important day for all of us as we pay tribute to our mothers. I encourage every lodge to conduct an activity in honor of all mothers in the lodge and the community. The Elks Mother’s Day Service is very moving and meaningful. Mothers will appreciate being invited to a lodge breakfast, luncheon, or dinner held in their honor.

Lodges should also do something special for the men and women serving in our armed forces on Armed Services Day, May 19th. And on Memorial Day, observed on May 28th, our lodges, like our nation, should pause to pay tribute to our nation’s military heroes who have died. Memorial Day, formerly Decoration Day, was first observed on May 30, 1868, on the order of General John Alexander Logan for the purposes of decorating the graves of the Civil War dead. Memorial Day was observed on May 30 until 1971. That year, a new holiday schedule was adopted designating the last Monday in May as Memorial Day. Many Elks members will participate in cemetery services, parades, speeches, and/or other ceremonies to honor those who have paid the ultimate price on behalf of our country. Memorial Day continues to remind Americans that freedom is not free.

Thank you for supporting our youth, our mothers, the men and women serving in our military, and our veterans. Your dedication continues to exemplify that Elks Care—Elks Share.

Fraternally and Sincerely,

Recognizing Our Youth, Mothers, and Veterans N THE MONTH OF MAY, lodges should recognize and celebrate
