u Tucked away in a part of the cathedral known as the Patriots’ Transept, War Memorial Chapel is dedicated to all those who have ever served in the US armed forces.
Freedom windows, they were created by renowned artist Joseph G. Reynolds Jr. in 1952 and 1953, and their colors were inspired by the stained glass windows of the Cathe- dral of León in Spain.
In the south wall, above the altar
and directly in front of visitors as they enter the chapel, is the most extensive of the three sets of stained glass windows. This set of windows, called Sacrifice for Freedom, consists of three vertical panels topped by a variety of smaller stained glass windows. The two sets of windows located in the east wall, to a visitor’s left upon entering the chapel, are known as Freedom I and Freedom II. Each of these sets of windows has two vertical panels topped by a smaller, six-lobed stained glass window and a five lobed stained glass window, respectively.
