of the approach of British forces during the outbreak of the Revolution- ary War, and Abraham Lincoln is shown emancipating the American slaves during the American Civil War. At the very bottom of Freedom I, US Marines are pictured raising the US flag at Iwo Jima.
The historical scenes depicted in Freedom II include a representation of the reconstruction of Jerusalem, the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth, and William Penn, the founder of the colony of Pennsylvania, where believ- ers in one God were free to practice whatever specific religion they wished, at a meeting with a group of Native Americans. Individuals portrayed in Freedom II include King David and Richard the Lion Hearted. At the very bottom of Freedom II, visitors will find two sections of glass that show scenes drawn from World War II. In the panel on the left, an armored vehicle is shown coming ashore during an amphibious landing while artillery shells burst around it, and in the panel on the right the liberation of France is portrayed.
u This set of stained glass windows, called Freedom I, is located in the east wall of War Memorial Chapel and features large depictions of St. Michael slaying the dragon (middle, left) and George Washington dressed as a general (middle, right).
The Symbolism of Sacrifice In addition to the stories conveyed by the scenes shown in the chapel’s colorful stained glass windows, War Memorial Chapel is filled with many less obvious bits of symbolism that tell their own stories.
