great sand, so we can ship our product further than most. So while there has been contraction in the U.S., there has been expansion of foundries in China and India.


What technological trends have you recognized in the metalcasting sand market?


Te biggest change in technology would be in coremak-


ing. Te binder systems have changed both environmentally and in terms of strength and capabilities. Tere has been a movement from green sand—big molding lines—to smaller nobake lines and permanent molding.


Do you notice a difference in the purchasing habits of your metalcasting customers in different regions of the world?


In foreign countries, be it Mexico, China or Japan,


the market is driven by quality more than anything else. If they could buy quality sand locally, they wouldn’t be buying it from us. That quality is not only due to our manufacturing process, it is the quality of the natural reserve, the sand that we mine. We don’t see different types of environmental require- ments in different countries because, no matter where you are shipping sand, you have to meet U.S. law. Rather than responding to demand, we are pushing the develop- ment of an environmentally friendly product that would be advantageous for foundries to use. It is more opportu- nistic. There is no regulation out there that is driving us to it. It is offering the foundry a more environmentally friendly product.


Your company has a good environmental record. How have you shed the environmental stigma associated with mining companies?


Fairmount Minerals is proud of its environmental history and its social responsibility. We are mining the Earth, so we’re not apologizing for that. But it gives us an opportunity to do more with our lands and be more effective for future generations. One way we do that is to reclaim our lands as fast as we can after mining them. And we reclaim them in such a way that we put them back into a more natural state than when we started. We want to improve the habitat for the wildlife that was there before we were. We plant a lot of trees in all of our locations to reduce


our carbon footprint and our carbon dioxide emissions. We have teams that are always working on energy effi- ciency, reducing our energy use and improving our effect on water quality. We serve the water filtration market throughout the world, and we incorporate that into all our locations. We have solar energy projects at our plants, and we have been working with wind energy. We are working on the transportation side of mining production. We have been working with the railroad to improve the efficiency of our deliveries. We also are working with our customers in the foundry


industry to recycle their spent sand. We have a number of projects with foundry customers to use their sand as a feed- stock for cement and compost material to be able to sell the
