Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, recognized that wind power companies need casting suppliers that fulfill the industry’s high-technology requirements through flexible orientation and cost-efficient product management. Torgelow, which produces castings up to 150 tons, has
made extensive investments of more than 50 million euros to establish the largest hand molding and steel blasting shop, as well as the most modern smelting facility in Europe. Equipped with this technology, the iron foundry can now produce large-scale cast parts in high volumes in series pro- duction. Te goal is not to produce various cast parts in the shortest period of time, but rather to make use of opportu- nities in expanding markets, such as wind energy. “Wind energy is a strong pillar which is perfectly suited to Eisengießerei Torgelow,” said Torgelow CEO Peter Christian Weilguni. “It’s still a young industry that requires high quality castings, and that is exactly what we offer our customers.” Torgelow routinely casts 80-ton or heavier parts for wind
power systems, reflecting the industry’s advancement to multi-megawatt systems. A recent partnership with ASK Chemicals, Hilden, Germany, helped the metalcaster achieve core quality necessary to successfully produce these parts. ASK Chemicals’s con-
tribution was primarily focused on the adapta- tion of applications with sulfur boundary layers and special resins that exhibit a high degree of slippage or finishes that can withstand high thermal loading. Te uniform harden-
