Nadicom to Build $85 Million Wind Casting Plant in Iowa Nadicom

Officials from the North American Ductile Iron Co.

(Nadicom), Fulton, Md., recently announced plans to locate the company’s first North American ductile iron metalcast- ing facility in Iowa City, Iowa. Te construction of the facility, which is contingent on state

and local approval, is expected to have the capacity to pour and machine large castings with an initial focus on the wind turbine market. Te $85 million plant should employ 175. Nadicom Chief Executive Officer Prasad Karunakaran said multiple fac- tors were considered when choosing the location. “We plan to build this operation from the ground up and wanted a location that would allow us to…maximize productivity,” he said. “Tis Iowa City site provided a central location, complete with rail and other logistical consider- ations, and access to a world-class workforce.” Te Iowa City Area Development Group indicated it

had been in discussions with Nadicom, as well as the City of Iowa City and the State of Iowa, about the location since August 2010. Te city and state have pledged to work with the company to begin operations by 2013, subject to final approvals. Utility rates in the area were competitive and Nadicom plans to utilize a local community college job training program, Karunakaran said. Te announcement of the new plant was made at the Iowa

Wind Energy Association annual conference in Des Moines. Iowa Governor Terry Branstad confirmed the official announce- ment as part of his opening remarks at the conference. ■

Research Firm Says Supply Shortage of Zircon Will Continue

Consumption of zircon, a sand used in some specialty

metalcasting applications, rebounded in 2010 and is project- ed to grow 5.4% annually in the near future, driving material prices higher, according to metals and minerals research firm Roskill Information Services, London. Use of zircon sand in metalcasting applications has not

grown over the past decade, according to Roskill, but growth in other markets has pushed the demand, affecting metalcasters. Consumption of zircon reached 1.33 million tons in 2010

following an 18% fall in 2009 due to the global economic downturn. Growth over the last decade has come mainly from the ceramics and chemical sectors, growing by 4.1% per year and 7.5% per year, compared to overall market growth of 2.6% annually. China now accounts for more than half of total consumption, with the wider Asian region accounting for two-thirds of consumption. Roskill said capacity for zircon production might rise by 2.3% per year through 2015, as only a few new projects are scheduled to be commissioned. Zircon is produced predomi- nately in Australia (40% of output in 2010), South Africa (29%) and the U.S. (8%). Output is controlled by four major
