of $2 billion in spending GM announced May 10 that will create or retain 4,000 U.S. jobs in 17 facilities in eight states. Tese investments are in addition to $3.4 million GM has invested in U.S. manufacturing facilities since July 2009, adding or retaining more than 9,000 jobs. Te Bedford powertrain plant will use the investment for
new equipment to produce components for a recently an- nounced 8-speed transmission and a future small engine pro- gram. Te investment is expected to create or retain 91 jobs. Te Bedford improvement is part of a $2 billion U.S.
investment package GM rolled out on May 10. Te package is intended to benefit 17 facilities in eight states. Since mid- 2009, GM has invested $3.4 billion in its manufacturing processes and created or retained 9,000 jobs in the U.S. Te Bedford facility received $111 million in April of last year to produce GM’s Generation 5 cylinder heads. “We appreciate the tremendous support we have received
from the Bedford community over the years,” said GM Man- ufacturing Manager Arvin Jones. “Tis investment is possible because of the teamwork between GM, the UAW, the IBEW, the Bedford community and the State of Indiana.” Bedford currently has 405 hourly and salaried employees. ■

Honda Invests $50 Million to Expand Ohio Casting Operations 本田汽车投资五千万美元扩建在美国俄亥俄的铸造部门
Honda Transmission Mfg. of America Inc. announced a $50
million expansion to increase capacity for aluminum transmis- sion cases at its Russells Point, Ohio, U.S., diecasting facility. Te 75,000-square-foot expansion at the plant will house
high pressure diecasting operations and include a new melting furnace to support the addition of a third transmission assembly line that began construction in December 2010. Honda Trans- mission currently receives approximately 100,000 pounds of molten aluminum per day from two aluminum mills in Indiana. “Te new melting furnace will implement technologies
that will improve efficiencies and reduce our environmental impacts,” said Plant Manager Gary Hand. Honda said the project will bring its total new capital in-
vestment in its Ohio operations to more than $400 million. “Tis latest investment in Ohio is another example of
how we intend to meet the needs of our global customers by implementing advanced technologies in our operations and products,” said Honda Transmission President Yuji Takahashi. Te investment also includes construction of a new asso-
ciate entrance, along with a new lobby entrance and activity center, at the south end of the facility. When completed, Honda Transmission’s casting, machining, forging and as- sembly operations will encompass 1 million sq. ft. Earlier this year, Honda Transmission completed a $25
million renovation of the plant’s aluminum machining lines and steel gear production and made efforts to increase flex- ibility on the current assembly lines. Te modifications re- sulted in adding domestic production of six-speed automatic transmissions for some Honda Odyssey models. ■
