It is Sunday morning and you’re slumped on the sofa with a sore head. The TV is littered with cookery programs and you find yourself drooling down your chin and longing for a hearty home cooked meal... Sound familiar? We have the solution.

Road, the friendly atmosphere and canteen-style layout of the establishment provide a fuss-free, comfortable environment that perfectly compliments the nature of the home-cooked menu. It ain’t called Cockney’s Pie and Mash for nothing; the pies are, of course, the stars of the show! The pies are meaty, the mash is soft and fluffy and the gravy hits the spot; Cock- ney’s serves up cheap, honest food well worth getting out of bed for. Perfect for when you’ve blown most of your week’s wage at the boozer and a damn sight better than lying in your own vomit.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH JERK CHICKEN


As the summer season reaches its peak this August there is one big event looming on the horizon: Notting Hill Carnival! Not simply renowned for its colourful costumes and pumping music, the vibrant street carnival is equally celebrated for its rich and vast offerings of tasty Caribbean food. Bring a healthy appetite and an adven- turous palate to the carnival this year by preparing some of these mouth-watering recipes at home...


6 lb roasting chicken 1 tbsp. salt 2 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. paprika 1 tsp. soya sauce 1 small onion 3 tbsp. jerk seasoning


First up, rub the entire chicken with salt. Grate the onion and rub it into the chicken flesh. Add the paprika and garlic powder to the chicken. Rub the jerk seasoning evenly all over and allow the chicken to marinate for at least 2 hours. Roast in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 1-1 1/2 hours and serve.

tasty treats to be found in the capital city. The aptly named Mooli’s on Frith Street in Soho serve tasty Mooli’s


around the clock. ‘What the hell is a Mooli?’ I hear you ask. Well, the owners at Mooli’s call it their take on the hybrid combination of Japanese and Indian food... Ooh, exotic! They serve up a crispy flatbread style wrap with a variety of delicious fillings ranging from chicken and goat, to chickpea and paneer for the veggies. Prices for salad boxes and Mooli’s all stay between £4-5 while mini Mooli’s are a couple of pounds less. The menu also offers pappadoms, dahl and brownies. Perfecto!

the eye and pleases the palate is the ‘Sarma Kuzu Beyti’, a spicy, marinated lamb kofte wrapped in lavash, topped with tomato sauce and yoghurt and served with a salad, all at £8.50! Staff are friendly and attentive and with prices as low as they are, dessert will never have tasted sweeter. A meal for two including wine and water costs around £30.

The contemporary and minimalistic Shiso Japanese restaurant is hid- den behind draping black curtains and would be easy to miss in residential North London. However that would be a crying shame as Shiso serves up the freshest and tastiest sushi in the area, as well as a variety of other dishes for those not so keen on raw fish. The Salmon Teriyaki is particularly tasty and priced at only £6.50, so there is no excuse not to drop in.
