SMIRNOFF PRESENTS SENSATION @ The 02
Sensation lead the way in An Ocean of White
60 SECONDS WITH... JOACHIM GARRAUD
Issue 30 / August 201
Issue 29 / July 2011
The French DJ has played with the likes of Kylie Minogue and Moby, and cites Michael Jackson as his favourite artist ever. We caught up with him to chat about his new album, Invasion in 2011
It has taken a decade for Dutch group Sensation to touch down in London for the first time, but they are making up for it with the biggest party in London this year! Taking over The 02 with their most ambitious plan yet, the founder, Duncan Stutterheim, said: “I always looked forward to the time when it would come to the UK and knew it would be when the time, partner and venue was right”. With the theme An Ocean of White, expect jelly fish visuals, epic fountain firework implosions and glam and gargoyled sea darlings emerging from dry ice and flying overhead. The line-up is pretty spectacular, with Carl Cox, Laidback Luke, Sander Van Doorn, Fedde Le Grand and more! Dress code? Strictly white for Sensation’s dramatic realisation of a theatrical audience. Make sure you don’t spill those Smirnoff Cranberry cocktails down your outfit.
EventREVIEW
HESSLE AUDIO @ FABRIC Hessle Audio hijacked Fabric for the night to kick off July
What kind of music did you listen to growing up? Classical music. You have to start with Chopin, Bach and Beethoven in order to be able to read and to write music.
Is it true that you don’t like to be in the spotlight? Yes. I’m not comfortable doing a TV show just to promote some- thing, which is why I prefer to stay in the shadows.
You have a new album com- ing out soon, right? Yeah, I have a brand new album
called Invasion in 2011; download it from my ‘Invasion Box’ only available on the web at
www.inva-
sion2011.com
What do you think about people who say DJs are not true musicians/artists? Well, I play the keyboard or guitar on stage as well as CDs, so it’s like a live concert; just playing CDs, for me, isn’t a live concert.
What do you in your down- time? I have a very private zone in my life with my family and my kids,
so when I’m not touring or at the studio I just enjoy life with my kids.
Are you for or against illegal downloading? Against it. I’m cool with free down- loading when artists choose to do it, but when I release a new album and find it on websites selling my tracks illegally, I’m not happy about it.
Who is your favorite artist ever? Michael Jackson. He was re- ally ahead of his time and 100% unique; there will only ever be one
Michael Jackson.
What’s the reception like over here? The English are crazy! I love them! They are one hundred percent in the music and I really like that. English people know how to party!
One last question: if you could fill a swimming pool with anything, what would it be? Sushi! A big swimming pool with lots of sushi in it. Sushi with wasabi and ginger.
TEN YEARS AGO IN HOUSE…
Mixmag Mixmag launched their first website with community fea- tures and music guides while Resident Advisor’s online forums got up and running.
For those of who are unfamiliar with the Hessle Audio collec- tive, they are a group of artists currently making a name for themselves on the UK Dance scene. They have been making big moves on the music stage of late, with Ramadanman, Ben UFO, TRG and Untold at the forefront of the crusade and big bass smashers with a definitive ‘Hessle’ sound in its wake. They took Fabric over at the beginning of last month with Ramadanman and Joy Orbison on point as usual and Ben UFO and Oneman in Room 1 tearing up the place ‘til 6.30am. Joy Orbison sealed the deal when he dropped ‘Battle For Middle You’ by Julio Bashmore, all in all making for a sick night! Be sure to check out the Hessle Audio crew at a club near you.
New Order James Holden, John Creamer and Lee Coombes re- worked New Order’s ‘Someone Like You’ after publicly stating they no longer wanted to make electronic music.
Space Ibiza Space Ibiza superclub leads a sell-out, round-the-world tour with resident DJs David Moreno, George Morel, Shawn Rudnick and Jim Reed.
Fatboy Slim Fatboy Slim won 6 MTV Video Awards for ‘Weapon of Choice’, directed by Spike Jonze.
DJ Spinnin’ Sampling both Blondie’s ‘Rapture’ and Morrisey’s ‘Barba- rism Begins At Home’, DJ Spinnin’s ‘Punk Chic’ became a dancefloor sell-out.
