LIQUID FUNK - OLD AND NEW

A brief look at those who championed the sub-genre, and those who now bear the torch

THE LEGEND: CALIBRE

Dominick Martin, better known as Calibre, is at the forefront of the Liquid Funk Drum and Bass scene. Calibre began his career as a leading Liquid Funk producer and DJ in 2001 after being head- hunted by Fabio, a pioneer of this sub-genre of music.

We Fear Silence have got another massive night in store for us

Prepare for another very heavy session at London’s infamous Cable club; this one has all the makings of a legendary night with a diverse line-up keeping it fresh and moving forward once more. We have the influential collective of artists from Shogun Audio Record label hijacking Cable London for the night with Alix Perez, Friction, Dbridge, SpectraSoul and more on the decks. One of the most essential labels in Dance music today, it is not surprising that the all-star resident cast play a sell-out show every time. For the ultimate in Drum and Bass music, this event is not to be missed. It’s going to be electric!

His classical influences are clearly drawn upon in his production, creating a fusion between the instrumental features of Liquid Funk and its juxtaposition with percussion, and his production

THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: ALIX PEREZ

EventsPREVIEW EASTERN ELECTRICS @ GREAT SUFFOLK STREET WAREHOUSE 20 AUG

Alix Perez has made a name for himself on the DnB circuit by imitating the styles of those who have gone before him, such as Calibre and Marcus Intalex. His debut album, 1984, was met with an extremely positive response as critics buzzed excitedly over the sheer diversity of the tracks, and since bursting onto the scene in 2009 Perez has received support from a number of reputable DJs, most notably DJ Friction and also Bailey, Fabio and Bryan Gee. The DJ includes his mother among

his musical influences, claiming that he consults her opinion before completing any piece of production.

Now represented by Coda, Alix describes his DJ style as: “Eclectic. I play generally deep but dip into various aspects of Drum and Bass. I like to read the crowd and let the music breathe. I find mixing in the right musical keys essential. I basically see it as a journey.” A promising future for this sub-genre and its pioneers.

GUESTLIST TIMELINE: SWERVE Liquid funk: born and raised by Cable’s resident night

Run by Fabio, the Liquid funk pio- neer himself, the night has moved its residency through some of the most celebrated venues in London. We take a look at the journey that Swerve has taken over the years...

2001 The night itself began in the cosy Velvet Rooms,

This month, Eastern Electrics is once again breaking the barriers of Electronic music with its cutting edge display of virtuosic talent

You may have felt it before; three times a year London trembles, and from under the ground rise talented new stars of the Electronic music scene to take part in Eastern Electrics’ massive musical showcase. The next takeover of Great Suffolk Street Warehouse is this August bank holiday Sunday, and promises a suitably formidable line-up selected by three of the finest House labels: Mulletover, Made to Play and Reprise. Simon Baker is to feature in the Mulletover room alongside the rich, hypnotic House of Robert Dietz. The Mulletover mischief- makers have also added front-runner of the nu-school, Richy Ahmed, along with a very special guest to be announced… Made To Play label founder and DJ, Jesse Rose, is himself featuring in the Made To Play room; you have been warned to ‘expect the unexpected’ as his insightful selections give an undefinable overall vibe. Reprise, meanwhile, have chosen to saturate the warehouse air with the fresh Dubstep and Drum and Bass sounds of Icicle, along with Rinse FM favourite Monki. DJs will be running from 10pm to 6am, and there are to be four ticket release dates in total, rising in increments from £10 up to £18. Make sure you get in there quickly and order your tickets from www.easternelectrics.com/tickets.

where it ran successfully for two years until the venue shut down.

2003 Swerve moved to new location, The End,

possibly the most influential and charismatic venue of our genera- tion. Sadly, The End shut six years later and Swerve was once again on the hunt for a new home.

2009 The night takes up residence in Ruby Lo in

Marylebone. It continues to rock with a full house and DJs including DnB big dogs Andy C and Friction playing one-off sets.

2010 Swerve joins a number of other club nights at

London favourite Cable, where it finds its new home and continues to serve up some of the finest Drum and Bass to this day.

has retained a level combination of classy and cool throughout his career.

Alongside this, Calibre has man- aged to remain a prolific artist, having released a total of seven albums in nine years. Although his work has sometimes been criticised for feeling too spare with sporadic, scattered chords and loops, no-one can deny that it has provided a pivotal development for Liquid Funk - one that is continu- ally celebrated to this day.
